Have you tried contacting local companies to see if they can offer anything? Where about in London are you? There are a lot of oil & gas and petrochemical engineering companies in central London and to the south and west in places like Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire etc.

Relevant work experience is hard to get and, more importantly, not required.

You could try summer schools or taster courses. But if you're not economically disadvantaged you'll probably be at a... disadvantage when applying.
