Hi can anyone tell me what laundry facitities there are at Leicester Uni? Is there a laundrette onsite etc and is it expensive?

Thanks

in Digby there were 4 washing machines. they cost 2 pounds and you had to provide your own soap/powder. there were dryers that cost 50p for 20 mins. this will be very similar in all the other halls. any more information you need?

The laundry services are expensive but you can fit quite large loads in, which is a plus. I don't bother with the driers and just have an airer in my room and dry my clothes on hangers with the window wide open.

GMS has two laundrettes one at Stamford and one at Gilbert Murray. The one at Stamford is quite tiny but the one at Gilbert Murray has a few more washers.

John Foster also has one on site, I think there are about 6 Machines and 6 dryers.
Machines I think are £2/£3 and dryers are 20p for 20 minutes I think but 20 minutes does bugger all and the clothes are still wet. As above though, you have to provide your own powder.

I dont actually know much about the laundrette lol, Ive been once in the entire time ive been here, which is pretty impressive. I decided at the begnning of the year that my game plan was to bring virtually every item of clothing that I own, so I can go a good 3 weeks without having to wash stuff, by which time im due a visit home

There are about 7/8 washers at John Foster.
£2 for a normal wash, £2.20 for a super wash.
It's 20p for 16 minutes or something stupid I think. I don't really know. I usually just put £1 in and all my stuff is dry.

The washers are pretty big (can easily get 1.5 to 2 loads in when measuring with your standard 'home' washing machine') so it's not too bad

Yer the washing machines are huge! I can happily fit 3/4 weeks washing into one of them.
At GMS there are 4 washing machines and 4 dryers at Stamford, then like 8/9 at GM. It costs £2 a go and 20 p for ever 20 mins drying.... i generally put it on for an hour and its dry. You have to provide your own powder/tablets.

And in all of the laundrettes you'll find an oh so useful condom machine (just what you need when you're doing your washing!), and no machine where you could get a scoop of washing powder, or some tablets, for when you've discovered you've run out on the day your down to your last lot of pants :frown: (I borrowed some so all was well in the end )
But seriously. They should have a change machine and a powder machine. It would make life soooo much easier :

Thanks for all your replies.
One last question: are there ironing boards and irons around the halls (particually John Foster or Beaumont as that's ideally where I would like to go) or do you have to provide your own?

Thanks

Each flat should have their own ironing board and iron though I suggest brining your own iron as they ones they provide aren't amazing

Yeah definatly bring your own iron id say, ours was (is) completely unusable because someone had burned something onto it before we moved in, so for the first few weeks until I went back home to get our spare (was too tight to just buy one) I was having to use my hair straigheners to get creases out of my clothes

Psssh. Ironing is over rated. I don't iron anything ever. Except for a shirt I was wearing to a job interview. Just make sure you hang everything up properly to dry and you don't really get any creases!!

I haven't ironed anything yet! And i don't plan to start :p: None of my clothes however are very creasable so its all good!

And as for jf having condoms in their laundrettes..... we have contraception leaflets and other such joys :p:

I always iron my clothes :P But seriously, bring your own iron. The irons in JF don't have tops on where you put the water in, so if water accidently drips out, it is VERY very painful when it drips on you. Trust me, I know. And they're usually all clogged up and yellow stuff comes out onto your nice white t-shirt. Sigh.

They are provided
Well, theres one in our flat anyway.

it'd be funny if someone stole the ironing board lol. Or managed to break it in half...

Reply 16

Well, ironing boards aren't quite strong so I don't know about the breaking it in half! :p: But I guess someone would be strong enough too!
