"The volume of oxygen that has to be absorbed and the volume of carbon dioxide that must be removed are large in mammals because they maintain a high body temp which is related to them having high metabolic and respiratory rates."

Can someone explain this further please?

So for having a high metabolism there needs to be a lot of chemical reactions occuring in body carrying out various processes such as the break down of food, for the reactions to occur effectively there needs to be a high body temperature so particles involved in reactions have more energy and are more likely to collide with enzymes, thus having a faster rate of reaction. To get a high temperature the body needs to have high rates of respiration, if you look closer are respiration itself what it actually does is heat up cells to provide a more suitable temperature for chemical reactions. To have fast respiration requires a lot of oxygen and carbon dioxide is then released as a waste product of respiration. If you look at this basic equation, I only say this coz it's more of a summary equation, 6O2 + C6H12O6 = 6CO2 + 6H2O
