Syria: Just who does Russia support Syria or Turkey?

I’m totally confused. I was led into thinking that Russia had total commitment to supporting Assads Syria.

However in the last few days Russia has made a deal with Turkey to invade Syrian Kurdistan and replace the Kurds with Sunni jihadist groups like Al Nusra etc. The same groups that Assad is trying to eradicate in Idlib an area the size of Wales.

If these new Jihadists take over Syrian Kurdistan they’ll occupy nearly 3/4 of Syria in addition to the remaining ISIS territory. Both will be a threat to Assads regime and undo the billions of roubles Russia has spent on fighting terrorists and restoring peace in Syria.

The Kurds have offered their territories to be occupied by Assads Syrian forces especially Manbij. Yet there is no real news to suggest Assad has taken up the offer.
Syrian Kurdistan occupies an area the size of England and Wales, handed to Assad on a plate!! by the Kurds because they’d prefer to be under Syrian control than jihadist slaughter, beheadings etc supported by Turkey. If Assad takes up that offer he has more or less reclaimed his entire country back.

Or does Russia not really want Assad to win?

Just what on Earth is going on?
Russia supports Russia. Putin wants to extend Russian influence in the Middle East, maintain access to warm-water ports in the eastern Med and divide Turkey from NATO. He doesn't care what happens in Syria or Turkey, or which politician is in charge so long as he achieves his goals. It has always been the case that Putin was only using Assad, he has no personal loyalty to him.
The Syrian civil war is without a doubt the saddest and most tragic story of the 21st Century.

Half a million people dead to keep one man in power. The shear senselessness of the killing is mind boggling. Torture, massacres, gassing, you name it.

The worst part is, we could have stopped it. The UK (for all of the many faults of Western foreign policy) along with America could have put an end to this Nazi regime in 2013.

1000+ civilians were gassed to death and we stood by allowing 500,000 to die.

Whatever mess there is with Russia, Turkey, Kurds, Manbij, FSA and Jihadists could have been significantly curtailed if we had acted when we should have.

Yes, we could have - and at the time I thought it was a mistake for Miliband to vote against intervention - but nobody could have foreseen the absolute mess Syria would turn into. It was a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

But why is Assad holding back? The Kurds have offered their lands back to Assad on a plate! He can take those territories without any battles and secure his borders.

Instead if Russia and Turkey gets its way it could take decades and thousands of billions of dollars to reclaim northern Syria from the clutches of the Jihadists intent on extremist Sunni wahhabism. Not to mention the Jihadists will group in these areas with intent to take back Aleppo and spread through Syria again. Why doesn’t he just take this gift?
Even Erdogan has said if that happens, Turkey will end its involvement in Syria.

Assad could just send his troops in and secure the entire Syria Turkish border and call an end to this 8 year long disaster.

Also if Russia goes along with Turkey this entire area will become a base for international terror. A lot of the groups Turkey is sending into Syria are a threat to Russia, many are made up of brutal hardcore Chechen islamists who have been known to launch terror attacks against Russia such as the dreadful Beslan school massacre. I seriously think Putin has lost the plot.
