M515 – Roads Motion 2018, Connor27 MP
This House believes that roads should be privatised because roads are paid for by taxes and taxation is theft.

In many places in Britain there simply isn't enough room for multiple road companies to construct roads parallel with each other, this will lead to monopolies and the much-fabled "competition that increases quality and lowers prices for the consumers" will not happen.

This motion comes about every single time. And no taxation is not theft.

Nay, the roads are an important service used by almost all of the public and therefore should be paid through tax revenue, which is not theft. Additionally, who would pay for these privatised, untaxed roads for repairs? I suspect either way taxes will be paid on them.

Would this see certain people restricted from accessing certain roads, as the firm sees fit? This would most certainly decrease equality of opportunity for the poorest among us. A ridiculous motion.

The best part of the term is seeing who gets the joke and who doesn't.

Aye, sure my house will be knocked down so that Arriva Roads™ can build a Road® that gives more comfort to your car than the one next to it operated by Virgin Everythingⓒ, but we must all make sacrifices in the name of Freedom™!
