Hi everyone,

I haven’t seen a thread for students expecting to go to UCL this september to do the social sciences course. I thought we could talk on here about the course or get to know each other a bit.

I applied for the social sciences and social sciences with quantitative methods 19/10/2018 and got both offers about 2 weeks later. My first choice is the straight social sciences degree.

Anyone else applying for the same course?

Got an offer for straight Social Sciences as well. Where else did you apply to? Sounds like UCL is your firm!

Yeah definitely will be my firm! I also applied to Bath, Loughborough and LSE. What about you?

Applied to UCL, LSE, KCL and Edinburgh, rejected by Cambridge. Will go to LSE if they offer, though! What is attractive about UCL's Social Science to you? Currently, UCL and KCL are quite tied for my insurance, though I thought it may sound crazy for someone to pick KCL over UCL. :/

I visited KCL and didn’t really like it much because the course had no psychology in it and didn’t feel right for me overall. UCL just has a good vibe, I really enjoyed the open day, nice location, the course is perfect, exactly what I want, the societies etc. I haven’t heard from LSE yet. I guess it depends what you’re looking for but it would be cool to put UCL as your insurance! Did you apply for sociology at LSE?

Yes I applied to Soci at LSE. Did you as well? As an international applicant I really haven't got the chance to visit the campuses yet, but that seems like a really big make or break factor for most UK applicants I have spoken to so far. There's just not a lot of information available to me on the web so I haven't been able to make a decision. I did notice UCL's course is a lot more of soci + psych while King's is a lot more qualitative with politics and policies, but I think at the end of the day, it really boils down to what kind of "social science" am I more inclined towards, I suppose. When you said you visited KCL - did you visit them at their Open Day as well? What did you like or not like about them? Any amount of info would really help for now!

I visited for the open day. It was a nice atmosphere, everyone was really helpful. I spoke to the head of the department and he was really nice. He showed me some books kind of ‘recommended reading’ but just if you feel like reading them. I asked him about the course and that’s when I found out they don’t include any psychology in it which I’m interested in (mainly sociology but psychology too). I just think that when u visit somewhere u can either see yourself there or not. I didn’t really at King’s whereas UCL i couldn’t imagine myself elsewhere. King’s is a good location though and really close to LSE. If you want you can give me your snapchat and I’ll send you the picture I took of the recommended books

Ahaha thanks for the offer but I am actually currently an undergraduate myself looking to start anew so I will pass on the books as I have more than enough to read for now. T_T Currently, funding is a bit of an issue so I will probably make the trip only if I secure a scholarship from an organisation here in my home country to consider which uni to go to. I am currently reading Linguistics which touches on psychology as well (psycholinguistics is a proper subfield) but so far nothing that interesting to me, but in all fairness that's because we deal with the parts of psychology that intersect with linguistics only, nothing on social psychology, or even talking about human behaviour etc. Are you taking Soci or Psych as part of your subjects? What is it about psych that you like?

No problem. Sociology and psychology feature in most modules in the social sciences course at ucl which is why i chose it. Idk i just like psychology and don’t really want to drop it yet, even if i don’t specialise in it

Hey guys, I have an offer to study Social Sciences with Quantitative methods at UCL. Ngl I preferred this over the straight course, as I heard it’s more economics based, and the straight course is more psychology based.
I also applied to Kings, LSE, Durham and Cambridge(rejected ah)
I have offers from the other four and am really stuck between LSE and UCL! (The LSE course I’ve applied to is International Social and Public policy- it’s more government policy based I think)
But yeah, if any of you wanna talk on another social media we could maybe create a Facebook group or something??

I idiotically accidently applied to do sociology of science (instead of social science) at UCL. I changed this choice through UCAS meaning my application to UCL was submitted a day after the deadline. Will my application still be considered?

The other places I've applied (all sociology) are Warwick, Bath, Brookes (received offer) and Durham (received offer).

Thanks
