I do Computer Science for Games. I did games design at college. I'm on my placement year (completed 2 years previous). But since the start of my second year, I've had this constant dilema that I don't enjoy what I'm doing. At first, I thought it might just be the University lifestyle, the lectures, classes etc.

But now I'm nearly 6 months into my Placement year doing Web development. I'm competent and constantly praised for my work, I get along with my colleagues and you'd think that it's going great. But I just don't like programming.

I've considered changing over to Games Art as that's something I'm passionate about and something I could see myself doing as a job. I did it at college and I enjoyed it (minus the other students). But now I'm in this dilema that I would have to pay one or two years tuition fees, I'd have another 3 years of university. I could probably afford one year if I got a part time job. But I feel like I would struggle to get a job for

In all honesty, as you only have one more year left, I think it makes most sense to finish the course if you possibly can. You'll then have a degree, and this will enhance your employment prospects even in related fields.

When you get closer to graduating, you can start applying to jobs you think you'd enjoy even if they're not 100% related to your degree. Smaller firms especially may want to employ someone who has multiple skills. As soon as you're able to get relevant experience, it will matter even less what the exact title of your degree was.

Maybe when you finish your placement, you could look at getting some work experience for a role you think you might enjoy?

SBennett1998,

It's great that you've been getting so much praise on your web development placement so far, but, I can completely relate to you spending time in a position and finding that you don't enjoy it! I'm a final year Business and Enterprise Management Student at Sheffield Hallam University, and, I initially wanted to do a computer science course and work in programming, but, found I didn't actually enjoy it, despite being skilled in the area. I would recommend completing your current course now as you are so far into it, and, you don't necessarily need to have a degree in the field you want to go into, as long as you can relate the course and skillset.

Thanks,

Harvey
