my aunt works for connexions, she said the one case of a girl turning down oxford she knew about ended in them phoning her back and saying "did you really mean to do that?! are you sure?"

I know of a guy who turned Oxford down because he decided he didn't want to leave Rome and so he stayed here and studied in an Italian university! (how silly is that?)

i had a friend who was made an offer for only one of the subjects he wanted to apply for (joint honours) so he turned it down & is now at imperial..

i didn't know you coudl get accepted for only ONE of a joint honours. I thought you either got accepted or you didn't. weird :biggrin:

well..oxford like to think they're special.. :wink:

& do this with joint honours from time to time i think. he got the best score out of all uni applicants in the exam for one component i think..so they wanted him. but he didn't want to just do the 1 subject, so..

If applying for joint honours, you can choose on the Oxford form whether you want to be considered for single honours as well, in one or both of the joint subjects.

At undergraduate it's quite common actually, I personally know several people who got an Oxbridge offer but went somewhere else, whether it be to the US or a UK university. I would predict that about 15% of Oxbridge offers are turned down in favour of going elsewhere; certainly a lot more than people believe.

At grad it's very common, many people reject offers from Oxbridge, often in favour of the other place.

A friend of mine turned down homerton (Cambridge) for music to do it at york. I am yet to understand why but I think it was because he wanted to do the York course.

i know one person who turned down oxbride becasue they didnt want to wante a year of their life on the offer when they had an unconditional from another uni (edinburgh, i think).
I also know someone who went for the interview and thought cambride was a horrible place, thought it was far too elitist, posh, old-boys-club style, and when they phoned to tell her she was in, she told them right there and then she didnt want it, even though she was only holding one other offer at that point!!

(I quite admire people for turning Oxbridge down - they really aren't much greater than some other places, as they're made out to be, I think, although they are pretty great)

I'd turn down Ox for Geog if I got into both Ox and Durham.

If Cambridge would have offered me a place (they didn't anyway :biggrin:

) I would most likely have turned it down for Bristol, purely because of the course. Cambridge was General Engineering, whereas Bristol was Civil Eng with French.
