Which, in your opinion, is the most male dominated subject at uni?

At a guess Physics or Engineering.

I would think that computing/computer science is quite male dominant.

yah thats true. doh, knew i'd miss one important one out

yeah anything with lots of maths.
Maybe Economics, cos when i went to a few open days, there didnt seen to be many girls in the Economics talks.

There are about 40-45% girls on my maths course, and I would think about 30-40% girls in my physics course.

Engineering has less than 10% girls in my year.

i would've thought engineering would be higher, and physics lower. at the moment (A level) there's about 3 girls in a class of 20 in my physics class.

At Bristol, I've met quite a few female physicists, yet on my course - Civil Engineering - there are 6 girls out of around 60-70. It was a similar story at open days. So I'd say Engineering and I imagine Computer Science too.
Ha ha!

It's definitely not Modern Languages - it's like 60:40 men to women - and the odds are 20% of them will be hot, 20% of them will be funny, 20% will be interesting, and therefore 0.8% will be all 3!!! The odds are in my favour!

(Please, no one ruin it for me by correcting (a) the maths or (b) the logic)

Engineering has something silly like a 10:1 ratio of men to women, though that's changing. E&M at Oxford is 21 girls and 68 blokes so that's quite male dominated, though not as bad as Engineering.

Really, I thought girls were in quite a majority in languages?

It's not normally that bad - my tutor was saying they normally have about 25:75% female:male on the course, but for some reason it didn't work out this year.

Electronic Engineering (Newcastle) - 3 girls, 48 boys. Of the three girls, only one is vaguely attractive. I chose a stupid degree!

In my Computer Science degree at KCL, it's about 65% males and 35% females. Dunno why it's that high. I guess it's because it was available at Clearing this year and it seems a lot of people were originally rejected for Physics, Maths or something similar and offered a place for Computer Science instead (like me!).

Everything single time me and my mate go to one of our lectures, there's always a law class in there beforehand and god, there are so many attractive girls in there. *cough* wrong degree! *cough*

Think I'd tend to agree and say that Engineering is the most male-dominated. Straight sciences at my Uni do seem to have a higher proportion of females than engineering does. In the disciplines of engineering, I was quite surprised. I expected MechEng to have the lowest proportion of female, but it's actually a close call between electrical and chemical. Think just in general, engineering is the most male-dominated.

Personally, I'm fine with this, and it doesn't bother me. What does bother me is when some Universities and some employers 'favour' women merely to fill a certain quota of females, presumeably to show that they're not being discriminative. The best person for the job/uni place should get it, regardless of gender. It's harsh on men because sometimes they don't get the job/place they rightly deserve, and it's harsh on women because it's patronising and gives them a false sense of capability.

Sorry if that sounds quite rambling! Has anyone else experienced anything like this/got any views on this?

my boyfriend's doing music tech. in each of the 3 years there there is a BSc and a BA. i think there's about 30 on the BSc and 60 on the BA. altogether that's 270 people...

and not one girl.

I'd say probs physics or engineering... which in many ways is applied physics!!
