The Official IPL 2019 Thread

Welcome cricket fans to the 2019 IPL page, after making an IPL page for the last few years, I thought I'd start this one a bit early.

For those new to IPL, it the most popular cricket series on the planet (no disrespect to any Aussie fans with KFC buckets over their heads )

There are 8 teams in the competition, who are:

Chenai Superkings (reigning champions / owned by the head of the indian cricket board)
Sunrisers Hyderabad (2018 runners up; formerly champions as Sunrisers Hyderabad and as Deccan Chargers)
Kolkata Knightriders (2 times champions co-owned by Bollywood Actors Shahrukh Khan and Juhi Chawla (& Chawla's husband Arjun Metha)
Rajastan Royals
(Inaugural IPL champions in 2008)
Mumbai Indians (3 times IPL champions & twice Champions League champions owned by the richest family in Asia - the Ambanis)*
Royal Challengers Banglore (Multiple finalists captained by Virat Kohli a.k.a. the best batsman on the planet atm and the Captain of India; owned by the Mallya family who are currently being investigated for tax evasion and formerly owned the Force India Formula 1 team).
Kings XI Punjab (former finalists who are co-owned by multiple parties, including the actress Preety Zinta)
Delhi Capitals (Consistently the worst team in the competition; formerly known as the Delhi Daredevils before 2019)

*Champions League T20 was a tournament where the top 3 T20 teams from India, Australia, England, WIndies, South Africa, Pakistan and other Countries faced each other - personal favourite match was the 2011 semi-finals between Somerset and Mumbai Indians.

Ipl is a 2 stage tournament, where each team plays each other twice. The 4 teams with the most points then face each other in knockout stages split into 3 semi-finals and a final. The 1st semi is between the top 2 ranked teams. The winner goes straight to the finals and the loser goes to the 3rd semi final. The 2nd semi-final is between the 3rd and 4th ranked teams, with the winner facing the losers of the 1st semi-final. The winner of this match faces the winner of the 1st semi-final in the finals.

Every year, there is a player auction, as well as a off-season transfer window. Each team can spend an absolute maximum of 82 crores (~£9.2 million) during the auction, with players having a reserve price of 2 crore (~£224,000), which can rise to over £1 million easily.

This year, the auction took place early, in December 2018 instead of the end of January 2019 and these results will be posted below.

2019 Auction Results Part 1 of 4

Chennai
As the Superkings had the lowest budgest their squad is largely the same as 2018 with no new foreign players. The only additions to the squad are Chennai returnee Mohit Sharma (Pacebowler with international caps for India) and Ruturaj Galkwad (22 year old Marathi Batsman)

2019 Squad

Pacebowlers: Mohit Sharma, Lungi Ngidi* (cant believe there is a player called lungi ), Deepak Chahar, KM Asif, Shardul Thakur, Monu Kumar

* - foreign players

Hyderabad
Like Chennai, they have kept a majority of their squad. Unlike Chennai however, they have released 7 players (Sachin Baby, Tanmay Agarwal, Wriddhiman Saha, Chris Jordan, Carlos Brathwaite, Alex Hales, Bipul Sharma, Mehdi Hasa), traded Shikhar Dhawan with Delhi in exchange for Abhishek Sharma, Vijary Shankar and Shabaz Nadeem. Additionally, they managed to purchase 1 batsman at the Auction (highly rated Martin Guptill who is great on non-indian pitches ) and 2 wicket-keeper Batsman (re-purchased Saha, in addition to purschasing English Wickie Batsman Jonny Bairstow). Finally, and what is the most controversial option (although 1 I am glad they had the guts to go through with) is the return of former disgraced captain David Warner, who was sacked after the Australian Ball Tampering controversy.

2019 Squad
Batsmen: David Warner*, Martin Guptil*, Kane Williamson**, Manish Pandey, Ricky Bhui, Deepak Hooda
Wicketkeeper(/batsmen): Wriddiman Saha, Jonny Bairstow*, s Goswami

2019 Auction Results Part 2 of 4

Kolkata
were busy at the auction purchasing overseas backup and pace options. they managed to purchase 7 players at a reasonable rate, however they spent 5 crore on Brathwaite. They still have 6 crore left to get batsmen in the off season

2019 squad
Batsmen: Joe Denly*, Chris Lynn*, Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh
Wicketkeeper(/Batsmen): Dinesh Karthik, Robin Uthappa, Nikhil Naik
Allrounders: S Mundhe, Carlos Brathwaite*, Andre Russell*, Sunil Narime*, Nitish Rana
Spinners: Piyush Chawla, Kuldeep Yadav
Pacebowlers: Prithvi Raj Yarra, Harry Gurney*, Anrich Nortje*, Lockie Ferguson*, Prasidh Krishna, Shivam Mavi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti

*-foreign players

Rajasthan
1 of the busier squads in the tournament purchasing a total of 9 players, most expensive of which (again) was Jaydev Unadkat, who went for 8.4 crore. Additional pace options included Oshane Thomas and Varun Aaron. Whilst they have a good looking pace option, their batting lineup looks intruiging as they have Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer (all of whom play / applying to play for England) and the returning Steve Smith (who was Captain of Australia in the ball tampering scandal). These 4 players however are only available for part of the season.

2019 Squad
Batsmen: Manan Vohra, Ajinka Rahane, Aryaman Birla, Prashant Chopra, Rahul Tripathi, Steve Smith*
Wicketkeeper(/Batsmen): Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler*
Allrounders: Riyan Parag, Ashton Turner*, Liam Livingstone*, S Ranjane, Shashank Singh, K Gowtham, Shreyas Gopal, Stuart Binny, Ben Stokes*, Jofre Archer*
Spinners: Ish Sodhi, Mahipal Lomror
Pace Bowlers: Oshane Thomas*, Varun Aaron, Jaydev Unadkat, Dhawal Kulkarni, S Midhun

Chennai and Hyderabad teams look very strong.

Especially Hyderabad with power batting, spin, pace options.

glad to see hyderabad has a great team this year (personally I felt they were missing Warner too much last year and hopefully he isnt too rusty).

I am aiming to complete parts 3 and 4 by the end of the week but who knows about how busy ill be this week irl. Delhi & Punjab looks quite promising, mumbai makes me feel like slapping the ambanis and hopefully RCB can get out of the bizarre slump they were in last year (AB is returning which is good).
IPL AUCTION 2019 PART 3 OF 4

Kings XI Punjab
The Punjab only retained 10 players for 2019, Including their opening partnership of KL Rahul & Chris Gayle, Purple Cap holder Andrew Tye & Captain Ravichandran Ashwin.most of the batting lineup is retained however all of their all-rounders are brand new including Moises Henriques and Sam Curran.

2019 Squad
Batsmen: KL Rahul, Chris Gayle*, Sarfaraz Khan, Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair, David Miller*, Mandeep Singh
Wicketkeepers(/Batsmen): Lokesh Rahul& N Pooran
Allrounders: Harpreet Brar, Agnivesh Ayachi, D Nalkande, Sam Curran* V Chakravarthy, Moises Henriques*
Spinners: R Ashwin, M Ashwin (no relations) & Mujeeb*
Pacebowlers: Arshdeep Singh, Hardus Vilojen, Mohammed Shami, Andrew Tye*, Ankit Rajpoot

*-foreign players

Delhi Capitals
Considering how bad they generally play, it is no surprise that they flogged a lot of their squad and only retained 14 players. During the transfer and auction periods, they have managed to get big names like Shikar Dhawan, Ishant Sharma, Axar Patel, Kagiso Rabada, Trent Bolt, as well as solid players such as Keemo Paul, Sherfane Rutherford, Colin Ingram, Nathu Singh and Bandaru Ayyapa.

2019 Squad
Batsmen: Hanuma Vihari, Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Colin Munro*
Wicketkeepers(/Batsmen): A Bains & Rishabh Pant
Allrounders: Harpreet Brar, Jalaj Saxeno, Keemo Paul*, S Ruthrford*, Colin Ingram*, Axar Patel, Harshal Patel, Manjot Kaira, Chris Morris*
Spinners: Amit Mishra (how has he not retired yet), Rahul Tewatia, Jayant Yadav, S Lamichhane
Pacebowlers: B Ayyappa, Nathu Singh, Ishant Sharma, Avesh Khan, Kagiso Rabada*, Trent Bolt*

I'm a KKR man.

What they lacked last year - back-ups for their overseas players plus an experienced pace attack - has been sorted. Brathwaite/Denly are in, as possible replacements for Russell. Lynn leaves early for Australia's World Cup prep so Denly will come in useful, you'd imagine. That will allow Uthappa to slot in as opener with Denly taking the fourth overseas spot. Starc/M Johnson gone, so Nortje and Ferguson come in. From a very thin 18-man squad last year, they're now at 21. It remains the smallest of all eight squads.
IPL AUCTION 2019 PART 4 OF 4 the fallen giants

Royal Challengers Bangalore
Going into 2018, RCB were expected to challenge for the title. What a lot of people didn’t expect however was the team to fail so miserably, only finding any real form towards the end of the competition. They have retained their top 3 of Kohli (currently the best Batman in the world and Captain of India), Patel and ABdV but have boosted their squad with 5 allrounders and 4 new batsmen. Coulter-nile is back but is only playing a part season due to touring Pakistan, thus Tim Southee (who joined from Mumbai in the offseason) could be more prominent.

2019 Squad
Batsmen: Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers*, Shimron Hetmyer*, Devdutt Padikkal, Himmat Singh
Wicketkeepers(/Batsmen): Parthiv Patel & Heinrich Klaasen*
Allrounders: Moeen Ali*, Colin de Grandhomme*, Marcus Stoinis*, Pawan Negi, Washington Sundar, Gurkeerat Singh (this guy was rated highly a few years ago in the Ranji trophy so could be a surprise with the bat), Shivam Dube (also a big hitter), Milind Kumar, P Barman, Akshdeep Narth
Spinners: Y Chahal

Pacebowlers: Nathan Coulter-Nile*, Mohammed Siraj, Tim Southee*, Umesh Yadav, Navdeep Saini, Kulwant Khejroliya

*-foreign players

Mumbai Indian

Finally, the most successful squad in the IPL series who have a habit of winning every odd-numbered season in the 2010s. Last year was a rubbish season where they were all over the place (particularly regarding batting, as well as their usual strengths of bowling and fielding). As expected, the Ambani family retained a large amount of the squad (they tend to be loyal to their players) and have resigned Lasith Malinga during the auction. In addition to this, they made a bizarre move to purchase Yuvraj Singh (for 1 crore) but have also made some interesting trades, chief amongst which (imo) is signing Quinton de Kock from RCB, giving them an intruiging choice of options to choose for the top and middle order. Additionally, they managed to get Jayant Yadav for a bargain 50 Lakh from Delhi post-auction.

2019 Squad
Batsmen: Evin Lewis*, Siddhesh Lad, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Anmolpreet Singh
Wicketkeepers(/Batsmen): Quinton de Kock*, Ishan Kishan, Aditya Tare
Allrounders: Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Ben Cutting*, Kieron Pollard*, Anukul Roy, Yuvraj Singh, P Jaswal, Jayant Yadav
Spinners: M Markande, Rahul Chahar

Pacebowlers: Lasith Malinga*, Mitchell McClenaghan*, Adam Milne*, Jason Behrendorff*, Jasprit Bumrah, Barinder Sran, Rasikh Dar

One problem TCB failed to solve was that of their opening combination. Parthiv Patel aside, they don't have a senior opening batsman, and that raises a question on Virat Kohli's batting position

true. Saying that however, Kohli has traditionally opened for them as the hare, whereas someone like Chris Gayle used to be the tortoise
In contrast to RCB, Mumbai seem to have gone overboard with opening batsmen and pacers. Anmolpreet Singh is probably the biggest name most havent heard of and has been doing well for India A and Punjab in the Ranji Trophy (his 1st class average is 94.77 & List A is 65.16). As I've noted a lot on here the last couple of years, Mumbai should be more flexible about their lineup, particulalrly involving their skipper. Whilst Rohit opens for India, he is really bad when it comes to batting 1st in the IPL. In contrast his form batting 2nd is a lot better (seems he is a better chaser in IPL for some reason).
Lewis on his day is 1 of the top batsmen on the planet yet he was in no man's land last year for Mumbai (form which seems to have continued this year it seems). Ishan Kishan has potential but is too much of a hot head imo. Siddesh Lad has unspectacular figures but has for some reason been bombastic in 1st innings scores in the Ranji trophy (before going cheap in 2nd innings). Jason Behrendorff should be interesting as he is a good death bowler and economical (whether this translates to ipl remains to be seen). Milne did well in the t20 blast year as a death over bowler as well but again, it remains to be seen how well this translates

I cant remember where I read it but apparently Hales was dropped as he was only going to play a parital campaign

England’s World Cup players must return to the UK by 24 April for ODIs against Ireland and Pakistan and thus miss the backend of the seven-week IPL that runs to 19 May. Bairstow’s deal comes after stopping off in Sharjah on the way back from the Sri Lanka tour and smashing a timely 84 off 24 balls in a T10 match. With teams able to retain players for future seasons, Sunrisers have seemingly taken the view that one of three players to score 1,000-plus ODI runs this year is a sound long-term investment, even the England opener will play only the first four weeks of next year.
CSK all the wayyyyy!!!! I hope Dhoni gets to take home this year's IPL Trophy again as well as the world cup, before his retirement. :bhangra:

You have to say, Sunrisers arguably had the best auction. Saha brought back, Guptill and YJB taken up. Warner is likely to miss a swathe of the tournament and Dhawan has gone to DDs, so Bairstow/Guptill will plug the gap. They may regret acquiring no overseas replacement for the injury-prone Billy Stanlake.
