Probably do re-takes. Although it might cause some problems, as I'm moving after this year.

The possibility is already annoying me, because I can't burn my notes as I planned to with the rest of my class in a huge bonfire, in case I need them for re-takes.

I'll probably do retakes if i can afford it if not im going to do an access to higher education course as it'll be cheaper and il still be able to go to university. if not im going to get a role of hollyoaks! :p:

Will it be the end of your world as you know it?

If you do fail, what do you think you'll do?

I know lots of people will say 'thats not going to happen' or whatever, but Im just interested to hear what your opinions are on the subject.

I don't know. I don't know what to do if I were in this position. There's not many choices to take...it's either becoming a beggar on the streets...or maybe redo the curriculum again. I would lose all hope if that ever happened to me. It would be the end of the world for me.
probably as much as it does to take the exams? :s-smilie:

That sucks about drama. Yeah, I think that's what I'll do then. Although I can't take part in the class IB note burning :frown: . Maybe I'll just throw in a few notes.

Throw away your english notes... tbh you can redo them easily also TOK notes!

I think retakes are the only option (a couple of last year's students are retaking exams with us...) - but you'd only have to retake the exams you failed/wanted to retake, right? I mean, what if you failed the diploma but got one or two sevens?

I'm actually seriously stressing out about this.... and I usually get really good grades. I just didn't have time to check any of my answers, and, for subjects like history, don't think I addressed the questions properly. Plus, I left quite a bit blank in Math yesterday.

So what if you don't fail, but don't get the number of points you need for uni - any plans? It's a little more likely to happen than failing, and I'm seriously worrying about it. I, for one, need 35 points with 16 at higher level and, up to now, haven't done well in my exams.

Aaaaargh, the agony of having to wait til July to find out!
Yep, that will be the end of the world. Even not getting my uni offer, which is seriously doubtful at this point, will be the end of the world.

It wouldn't be the end of the world.. I don't have the capacity to take academics incredibly seriously. I didn't apply to uni or anything.
I'd probably retake some stuff.. I've got a gap year to fill anyway.

I heard that if you fail one subject, as long as you get 24 as a total score for all your exams, they'll still give you your diploma. I consider myself lucky, because I'm not dependent on my IB grades to get me into university. If I fail the IB exam, I can use my local high school diploma to get me into university. If I fail the IB exam, I probably won't retake it, but I'll hope and pray and study really hard to pass the local exam. If need be, I'd retake the local exams.

I'd do ya mamma

(psst, on a more serious note, I'd have missed an exam because I got into a car accident or something, so I'd explain the situation calling the unis and still get in )

Yeah, does anyone know if you can just take one or two retests?

I don't believe failing an exam would stop me from getting into the university I've gotten conditionally accepted to, because I could still use my provincial marks/class marks.. But not getting my diploma would kill me. To be honest, I'd feel like such a failure.

And I have never known anyone at my school to repeat an exam..

I'm actually worried that I am in such a situation and I plan on retaking a subject (that starts with M) in November. Can maybe somebody tell me something about the retakes? For example, if I pass all other subjects (which I intend to do) this time, then I won't get my diploma, but only 5 certificates, right? But if I then only retake the one subject that I failed in November and pass, will I get a diploma, or will they only give me a sixth certificate so I end up with 6 certificates and no diploma? I mean, is it enough to retake the one exam or do I have to retake everything? And what about the diploma then, does it say that I first failed the exam or does it only include my November grade and the May grades from the other exams? Last question: How is it seen by universities? Say I get a very good IB (about 40 points) and get a 6 or 7 when I retake the exam, will the fact that I retook the exam be a reason for them not to take me despite my good result? Thanks for your help!

well dr. ofxo the rule of thumb is your aloud to fail a certain subject as long as you get the required 24 points, you will still receive your diploma. For me i'm definetly failing math, hopefully i'll get a 3  the thing is that there is some other regulations concerning that if you fail 2 subjects that then you have to get like 27 or smt.. i cant remember the extra rules, but your ib coordinator should have the rules somewhere to go and ask.

to you second question about the retakes as i said if you fail one but get over 24 the youll get your diploma, but if you fail to do so then you get 5 certificates for the time being and you retake only the one exam. On the diploma it wil say you grades for the ones you passed on M08 and then itll say the grade you got from the retake N08. so they wont actually know whether you failed the first time basically..

about universities i dont actually know how they take it but if you get 40 points from the ib and it says on the diploma you retook they most likely think that youre ambitious as you went to raise a grade so to speak. but if you get 40 points without with the included retake you would've gotten your diploma already from the may08 without having to retake, even if you failed.

dont loose hope just yet!

Thanks for your answer. So I basically can get a 1 in Math and still pass if I get more than 24 points which I should easily get? I thought that if you get a 2 in a HL exam you won't get the Diploma, even if you have only 7s in all other subjects.

Well, a question to anybody who considers retaking an exam or already did so: how are you going to prepare? Are there any special 6 month IB courses anywhere in the world? Or is the only way to study it on your own or with a private tutor?

And what about taking a 7th subject in November, how will that influence the Diploma? Is it at all possible, and, if yes, how will the 45 be counted with 7 subjects?
Reply 17
You can't get a 1, no. All grades must be 2 or higher, and you need 24 points overall, and 12 points from HL subjects (if you're doing three; if you're doing 4 you need 16 from HL). See here, or the Vade Mecum if you have a copy.

Doing a seventh subject has no bearing on your diploma. You get a separate candidate code for extra subjects (it starts with 'E' for extra - or at least it did back in my day!), and a separate certificate at the end. So you need to declare the 7th subject in advance - you couldn't do 7 subjects and only count the top 6 for the diploma.

Thank you, that's great. I think I can be pretty sure to get a two in math and more than 24 points and at least a 5 in every other subject. So I guess I will get my diploma in May, thank you

Guys, you can do retakes of your choice - meaning you won't have to redo exams in which you got, per say, 7s. So should you have failed one subject (or didn't achieve the grade you wanted) you can re-take the exam individually. You can even hand in new IA.
