(and yeah, perhaps select the college at camb's carefully!)

The pooling system minimises the impact of college choice, so it shouldn't really matter in the grand scheme of things.

I thought for BA Economics at LSE it's usually 9A*s. It may be slightly flexible in some cases.

For Econ & Management it should eb about 6+A*s I would've thought.

Cam aren't as fussy about GCSEs but you're going to have to SHINE at interview to convince them.

The year I applied (2006 for 2007 entry) it was 7A* but it seems to be pushing up every year. Like you say, there is some flexibility in the system -- especially for applicants who went to **** schools -- but for applicants from decent private schools you would be expected to have basically a clean slate of A* grades.

No. There is no "you must get X GCSEs to apply" requirement, or anything like that.

It's so frustrating still seeing this stuff being put about; the most cursory search of the forum will reveal thread after thread where people have worried about GCSEs, been told by some idiot that you have to get all/x number of A*s to have a chance, and have people who actually know call it out as bull****.

Good GCSEs will help an application; genuinely bad ones (i.e., Bs) could hinder it if there's not a good reason: but getting A's in the A-levels, PS, and interview/interview tests are the important things.

Indeed.
It's times like this I'm glad our rubbish school made all good student aim for four Bs at GCSE.

"It'll get you into most any uni" ...well not really Sir.

However, for straight Econ at LSE it really would be a waste of an application - the OP honestly wouldn't stand a chance.

Thanks

UCL have (effectively) only been giving out offers for Economics applicants with ~5A*!

 A friend of mine has an offer with 1A* for economics I believe

But I would be concerned about not getting near enough full marks in D1. I'm revising for it at the moment and as long as you remember and follow the instructions for the algorithms, it's pretty hard not to be getting an A in my opinion. Did you have a bad day or just not revise enough?

And out of interest, why are you not doing Further Maths with Edexcel?

Thanks for the little comment there about D1 being relatively easy. I revised quite a lot.

We're not doing F Maths with EdExcel because we do one night a week at the local university being taught by lecturers, hence MEI

Meh, the point I was making is that Economics is very very difficult to get into these days.

Economics at Cambridge is hard to get into.

To give you an idea:

I got: 12A*s GCSE and 6As A-level.

Those at my college got around the 10A* mark and 4As at A-level. All did Maths, FM, Economics.

Should do History. If you can't get an A, you won't do well in the British Econs Hist paper.

What I will say is that Cambridge Economics is an excellent course. Work your socks off to get onto it. You won't regret it.

PM me if want.

That's a lot of A's!
I'm thinking of applying for economics in the next cycle
I got 5A* and 5As for GCSE
I'm currently doing Maths, Further Maths, History, Physics and Economics for as, but planning on dropping history at the end of this year - don't enjoy it as much as the others and i'm not as good at it.
Is that a bad idea?

Shouldn't be a problem. Looking at that list, one would imagine history would be a little more useful than physics (history as an essay-subject, proving you can write, and providing some historical background to economics) - but I don't think that's likely to be in any way a big deal, so you're best off picking the subjects you enjoy most from that list and are most confident of an A in.

(edit: hang on, did I just reply to you in that other thread? Hehe, I'm not following you, honestly! :p: I just need to stop spamming TSR....must.....go.....revise.....)

Personally I would say that it is a bad idea, as they like you to have an essay-based subject.
Then again, I managed to get an offer with the same subjects you are planning to do at A2.

Yeah, I just saw this in the econ prospectus for Cambridge:

prospectus
The Faculty does not have standard requirements for subjects other than Maths: other A-levels which can be particularly useful in helping you prepare for the Economics course at Cambridge are History and Geography, but any three ‘academic’ A-levels may be acceptable.

History as useful but not essential, then. But I wouldn't read too much into that; ability and enthusiasm at PS and interview stage should count for more than subject choice, and at the end of the day so long as you get the A grades in whichever subjects you should get that far at least.
Reply 34
Hmm...
I guess i don't have to decide yet, do they know what subjects you're continuing to A2 when they make their offers?

Yes, because you will have predicted grades in them
Reply 36
Oh well, i guess i give up on that plan
Might just see what results i get, should help me decide
Thanks

The amount of misinformation in this thread is depressing. If you're not at Cambridge, don't tell other people who can get in and who can't, because (judging by experience) you'll be wrong.
Stuff like "They expect at least 4 A*s at GCSE" and other rubbish is extremely unhelpful, unless you're deliberately trying to undermine Access, please stop.
what college are you at F_A_T_E?

nonsense

it's an average course when compared to its counter-parts don't get me wrong but it is not that 'strict' to get into

i mean i know tons of people who have NO A*'s and have got in, I mean even the offer for some has been AAB (although i understand there typical is AAA)
