Living on Campus Vs Living at Home

I’m looking at universities I want to go to and one of the options I’m struggling with to decide is accommodation.

Does anyone have any advice or experience to share to help?

The situation is I feel like I would be constantly homesick living on campus and would struggle to make it like home but would travelling everyday to university and back be any better?

Depends on the length of commute, location and mode of transport.

I think a lot of people do get over homesickness after a few weeks of starting university and settling in.

Hello :ciao:

Having studied both in Liverpool and Edinburgh, there is definitely pro's and con's to the two (home and away).

I have personally never struggled with home sickness but if this is something you foresee yourself struggling with - good chance is you won't be alone!
Not only do universities have dedicated support staff for students struggling to adjust to living away from home, you'll also be living with others and generally be in constant company.

It also depends on what you want out of university. I went at a point where I simply wanted to study and didn't have much intentions of mingling and socialising - so home study suited me fine... but if you wish to experience the "typical" student life - I found myself being a lot more social when living away in Edinburgh.

Lastly, as others have mentioned, it all comes down to how far the commute between uni and home is. If you decide to stay at home and commute weekly - it can very quickly feel like a chore. Whereas if you stay on campus, you can visit home as and when you're missing it.

Hope this helps and good luck with your decision!
