Please please help with working out module percentages

For a friend-

I'm trying to work out my marks and their weighting and stuff.

Problem 1.

Module is seperated into 3 parts.

part 1 is worth 50% of overall mark. - I got 66%
part 2 is worth 20% of overall mark. - I got 68%
part 3 is obviously 30%.

What would I need to get in part three to bring the overall mark to 70?

Problem 2.

Module is 3 parts again.

part 1 is worth 10% of overall mark - I got 74%
part 2 is worth 65% of overall mark - I got 66%
part 3 is worth 25%

Same question, what would I need to get in part three to bring the overall mark to 70?

Rep for the person who can help! Thanks so much xxx

Each exam is worth 100 marks.
In part one you got 0.66 x 50 = 33 marks.
In part two you got 0.68 x 20 = 13.6 marks.
You therefore need 23.4 marks from the third part in order to bring you marks up to 70. The percentage required will be [23.4/30] x 100 = 78%
In the 2nd example:
The total marks for the exam is 100.
In part one you got 7.4 marks out of a possible 10 marks.
In part two you got 42.9 marks out of a possible 65 marks.
You therefore have 50.3 marks so far.
You now need another 19.7 marks from the 25 mark part three, i.e 78.8%.

Am I going crazy? I used this formula to work out a mark in a module with two parts:
I got 66% in the written which is worth 77% of the overall mark
I got 69% in the oral which is worth 33% of the overall mark
I calculated as above:
Part one 0.66 x 77 = 50.82
Part two 0.69 x 33 = 22.77
Added together they make 73.59, which can't be right because that means I got a first from two pieces of work which were 2.1s. What am I doing wrong?

77% and 33% add up to 110%. So it is impossible that one exam is worth 77% of the overall mark, and the other exam is worth 33% of the overall mark.

Considering this thread is almost 9 years old, it may be worth creating your own thread next time instead of bumping a really old one (although I can see that you pretty much have your answer now)

Just something to bear in mind for next time :h:
