I made my choices mostly based on what facilities on offer and what staff and students had to say about the course. I did check rankings but it was never a major influence in my decision. Just wondering how much rankings affected other people's decisions and questioning if it is something I should have accounted for more in my choices.

Rankings only played a small part in my decision. Course content was the most important factor for me, along with the university environment (I preferred a campus uni), accommodation and distance from home

Ranking tends to play a significant role in providing inspiration / motivation to pursue higher education so it really matters for people who value pride / honor after graduation

they matter a whole lot to me because they also seem to affect where you work after you graduate, and the starting salary you get.

When I applied, I wanted top 10 and RG. Mainly useless in hindsight, but the rankings are "suggestive". So if you get a top 5er, you are at least getting a well-run uni with good staff and research which attracts good students and probably has the funds for scholarships and nice buildings.
