Hey,

I haven’t yet seen a thread about this course, so thought I’d kick one off. I’ve applied for 2019 entry for the Social Data Science MSc (November deadline). Still waiting to hear back. Has anyone heard anything yet? Or had an interviews?

Hey, I'm in the same situation as you and waiting for a response. It would be super useful to see if someone else has had a response so far

Hopefully we hear back soon! The email said 8 to 10 weeks after the application deadline so basically any day from now. But I’m getting really tired of having a mini heart attack every time I get an email haha

Yeah, I can totally relate with you on that one!

On another thread for the Social Science of the Internet MSc at the OII, I saw that decisions are being released this week, so it should also be similar for Social Data Science

Looks like some decisions came through today for Social Science of the Internet MSc. But I still haven’t heard anything. How about you?

I haven't heard anything yet either.

It's ok though, as we're still in the 8-10 week zone. I'm thinking that the decisions will definitely be released before the OII's next deadline on January 25th.

I applied to the January deadline last week and I was wondering if anyone could share his or her experience regarding the interview? When did those who applied in November receive an invitation to the interviews and, how did they go?Every reply is very much appreciated.

I applied in November. I got my interview invitation 7th Dec and attended the interview 13th December. Unfortunately got rejected 11th Jan. But I got an offer from LSE in a similar course, so still happy.

There are three interviewers. The interview is not that hard, so you just need to view it as an intellectual discussion. Obviously, they ask what make you choose this programme, what can you contribute, what is your research ideas etc. Then is about your opinions on data science, social data science, the application of theories in social data science, the role of causality in the era of big data. They stress multidisciplinary very much, so you need to think of what multidisciplinary means, not just superficially but epistemologically.

Good luck with your application, let me know how it goes!

Thank you very much for your answer, I very much appreciate that.Congratulations to the acceptance at LSE! That’s great news. I also applied to that one as well, so let’s see how that goes. Maybe one last question: what was the difference between the three interviews? Was it just different people?Would you mind sharing your background with us?

Not three interviews, three interviewers in one interview.
Background UCL predicted first, social sciences.

Hi,

I'm a 2nd year PPE student interested in applying to the MSc Social Data Science program at Oxford next year. As a non-data science student I was just wondering if anyone had any advice with regards to the application process given your experiences and how best to stand out?
