University of Aberdeen Access Courses

Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone has ever completed one of the Access Courses they offer, specifically the Maths one. What the assessment is like etc? £350 is a lot of money to do it!

I'm interested in doing it in order to get into secondary teaching. I got a 3 at Standard Grade a number of years ago, which is not enough for teaching.

Hello! Yes, I completed this course. I highly recommend it! You can spend as long as you like (up to a year I think) studying - there are help videos, explanations and plenty of exercises. Once you feel comfortable, you do the exam (wherever you like). The exam consists of an online test (timed) and an offline test. For the offline test, they recommend 1h30 (can't remember exactly the time) but you are not timed and can take as long as you like with it.

As I said, I signed up in June, completed the exam in September and I received my grade at the end of November. I've used the grade to apply for post graduate courses which require maths and I've been accepted. Any other questions, let me know. Good luck!

Aaah thank you SO much for replying!!!

Really appreciate it.. sounds promising!
That’s great well done for completing it... I would be doing the same I’m currently at uni just now studying social work but really want to do the teaching postgrad once I have my bachelors degree!

Only thing is I am TERRIBLE at maths I failed so badly at school 🙈 did you find it easy enough?

What is the offline exam? I didn’t see any info on that on the website..

And is it easy enough to get someone to help u with it? Hoping my friends can help me 🤣

Huge well done for being accepted onto the postgrad course .. that’ll be amazing!!! X

I was actually studying N5 maths from Sept 2018-Feb 2019 and found out that the SQA exam was the same day as my university exam so that's why I studied the online access course. Luckily it was most of the stuff covered in the SQA N5 course but lots of it wasn't included too.

I think there are 9 topics? I can't remember exactly but as I said, there is plenty of exercises and you don't have to do the exam until you're completely ready. I think you can study it up to a year. You can get anyone to help you with it, none of the exercises are graded and you can do them as often or as little as you like.

For the offline assessment, you can do this anywhere and you download the question paper from the module, write your answers on paper and then scan and upload them and send them off.

How did you get in to Social Work without national 5 maths. I am taking the Aberdeen Access course to get in to Social Work. Really worried as maths is hard for me, but I really want to get in to uni so I'm going to give it my best shot.

Hey! I know you posted this quite a while ago but I was just wondering if you completed it? I'm literally in the exact same position now and trying to decide if I'd be able to learn it onlineThanks!

Hey! How did you get on with ur nat 5 maths course, was it really tough? did you get someone to help you? I got into Social Work without maths due to the experience I had, I switched from nursing to social work after I had passed 1st year nursing. Now I wanna do teaching, so I am going to do the Aberdeen Nat 5 Online Course this May so I can apply to the teaching postgrad for August 2022 (as I will have my bachelors degree by May 2022 so just need the additional qualification of maths and English to get me into the postgrad. xxx

Are they recorded sessions when sitting them online - like a real exam
