Have you got any examples of what you don't understand?

briefly thrust is a 'pushing' force and tension is a 'pulling' force
i.e. both essentially the same thing but in opposite directions.

very flexible things, like the light inelastic string beloved of examiners, cannot transmit thrust - if you try to push with them they just go floppy.
