If we are to let
Unparseable latex formula:

$V = \sum_{j=p}^{q} x^{j} $

, then what would be the value of
Unparseable latex formula:

$ xV$

, would the sum change to
Unparseable latex formula:

$V = \sum_{j=p+1}^{q+1} x^{j} $

or
Unparseable latex formula:

$V = \sum_{j=p}^{q} x^{j+1} $

, these are the only two options I can think of, thanks for reading.
No idea whats wrong with the spacing??

The two sums you stated are exactly the same. A simple change from jj to j+1j+1 allows you to switch between the two forms.
