Expand completely and simplify the terms:
(x+2/x)^4
would I take a factor of X out
x^4 (1+2/x^2 )^4 and now expand??

Given that the power is a relatively small positive integer, I would expand immediately.

I expanded using (a+b)^n from AS Maths
to get x^4 +8x^2 +24 + 32x^-2 + 16x^-4

Almost .... you've got your indices wrong. (binomial coeffs & powers of 2 are correct)

making the first term 1 is only compulsory if the index is not a positive whole number. in this case the index is 4 so you can expand ab initio.
