living with other students ?

i'm starting at brighton university this september, and although i'm so excited, i'm also really anxious to know what moving in and living with strangers is like ?
is it awkward ? and how long does it stay awkward for ?
how long does it take to meet people and make friends ?
what do you usually do for the first few days after moving in ?

if anyone has any advice or could share experiences, i would rly appreciate it!!!

In my experience, its only as awkward as you make it (sounds a bit of an odd thing, but hear me out!). My flatmates in first year were fine, but rarely ventured outside their rooms. Some of them I saw fairly often in the kitchen around mealtimes, but no-one really made an effort to socialise together (myself included, admittedly). It was nice when I wanted peace and quiet but did get a bit boring eventually.

On the other hand, I met loads of people outside of the flat that I made great friends with. Some were on my course, and it was really easy to find common interests that way. When I wasn't in my flat I would usually be in the neighbouring one, where the people were friendlier and easier to get on with - I met them on the bus when they were chatting about the footba scores that day, of all things.

I'd say the best thing to do is to get out of the flat and do stuff around the uni - there's usually loads in Freshers week. A good thing to do would be to organise a night out with your flatmates, as that's a really good way to break the ice. I'd advise against spending all day alone in your room if you can help it!

Hope that helps!

Hey @cindiez,

I think firstly you've got to remember that everyone's in the same situation so do not worry! My flat was great when I first started, we had a mixture of people and everyone just did their own thing, there wasn't any pressure.

For the first few days you'll just be settling in, take the time to make your bedroom your own and explore your new surroundings. Also I'm sure they'll be plenty of things going on at the uni such as sport fairs etc. We did this as a flat, which was a great way to get to know each other.

You'll meet new people in flats nearby, on your course and by joining societies. Best thing to do is to just get yourself involved and enjoy!

All the best in September,
Charlotte

Yeah it's a bit awkward at first but you just have to put the effort in to get to know them. Keep your stuff clean and tidy to show respect to them.

There isn't any set time for how long it takes to make friends as it depends on you.

You normally just settle into your accommodation and explore your new area.
Hi :hi:

Moving into Halls can be an anxious time. But everyone is in the same situation and a stranger is only a friend you haven’t met! We have a lots of students who have gone through exactly what you are planning to do and if you would like to talk to a student directly, you can chat to them via our Uni Buddies scheme:

https://www.brighton.ac.uk/studying-here/choose-brighton/what-is-university-like/index.aspx

We also have lots of information on our campuses via our website:

The first week of term is made up of our welcome week activities. This includes registering for your course. Attending the fresher’s fair. There is a full list of activities here :

The most important thing is to have fun and know we are here if there is anything you want to ask or if you have any concerns.

Enjoy!
