Totally agree, loads of people in college talk about hall being good, I think its very mediocre at best, with poor choice and repetitive meals to match. School meals were better.

You must be really lazy if you actively WANT to eat in hall. Cooking nutritious meals for yourself is relatively cheap doesn't take a long time at all. The only reason most people do eat in hall is the lack of kitchen facilities provided by college, and the poor quality of the facilities that are provided, especially at postgrad level.


In my experience the average student meal is a) Rather nutritionally unbalanced, think pasta much of the time with a sauce, and b) In the end no better than a hall meal.

The way we ate in Cardiff was fabulous. Three of us stocked up in Lidl every 2 or 3 weeks, and just lived off that food, averaging a spend of about £10 a week each on food.

A typical meal would be pasta (25p), red pesto (55p), tinned mackerel (29p), chopped onion/spring onion/shallots (20p) and chopped peppers (30p). That's 53p each and delicious. Takes hardly any time, produces little washing up and is generally fabulous.

That's what you can do with proper kitchen facilities and a properly cheap supermarket. That's why I started this thread.

Yeah, I like eating with people. Which is a bit awkward in your room. Besides, Balliol has pantry in the JCR, which is like another tiny less-nutritional hall.

£10 a week- thats awesome- damn lack of lidl/aldi in Oxford!

Although tinned makerel?....ewww.

On the Garsington road near the BMW mini factory. It's about as far away from the city centre as you can get and still be within Oxford.

Lidl's fine. It's not gourmet food but it's not exactly horrible. Compared to Pot Noodles etc or even just the pasta in sauce thing the meals we did from there were delicious and really nutritional.

I guess my standards are lower than all you guys' though...
