What do you expect me to do? Walk into the offices of the New York Times with an AK47 and a balaclava, and shoot some liberal journalists whilst screaming "Mary Poppins has been avenged!"??

This is an internet forum debating current affairs. Moaning about stuff is its entire raison d'etre, and why we are all here (including you).

If you don't ike my posts, don't read them.
Of course. It's just funny you keep saying how we 'need to do something', giving over dramatic Churchillian type speeches... on an Internet forum, yet you don't actually do anything.

So why don't you lead by example and actually do something, rather than just complain?

Do you have a source for this because I think it is improbable?

Firstly, miners were on strike for months before the general strike. Why are they covered in coal dust? They weren’t working.

Secondly the walls of that room are made out of vertical wooden planks, not panelling. You don’t find that in a Welsh pit village.

Those beer glasses don’t look like a British 1920s beer glass to me.

The advert is for Bass Burton Ale on draught. Again that seems unlikely for a pub in a pit village.

I am not convinced about the date, that it was taken in the UK or that the men were miners rather than tunnelling navvies.
I remember reading an article (which I can't seem to find again) a while back about the general strike on a Welsh news site which had this very photo in it. But I suppose it could have just been used as a generic photo of miners.

You must have a low bar for "brilliant" repartee.

As for "Churchillian type speeches" I wish. Amazed to hear him lauded (in any way) on this forum, mind. Every time I see him referred to here, it is in the context of how racist and Islamophobic he was, and the cause of the Bengal famine or something.

Everyone born in 1874 was a racist by today's standards. This constant judging of the past by the ephemeral standards of the here and now is a prime example of the sort of former wackiness which swiftly became mainstream, that we were discussing in another post.

But there are so many it is tiresome to cite them all, which is why I didn't bother to reply earlier. We would be here all day.

Quite, in recent times this place seems to have become rather popular among angry right wing blokes who write long, overly dramatic Braveheart speeches, filled with thousands of buzzwords about 'the left'.

He was a brilliant speech write and giver, whatever one thinks of his policies and views. Though I realise among certain right wing people, anything other than an unquestioning showering of praise means you're a Britain hating traitor, or something.

Quite why you consistently have an urge to give overly dramatic soap box speeches on here, and declaring how you 'will not stand for it ANY LONGER', is anyone's guess.

Someone made fun of how you tend to write overly dramatic speeches and you respond with an overly dramatic speech, in this instance one about how everyone apparently hates Churchill (this doesn't even matter at all to the joke that was being made, but whatever).

You're... not helping your case, are you?

Maybe not in its time, by the general public. The BBC show The Black and White Minstrel Show ran on prime time TV until about 1978, attracting audiences of up to 21 million. Occasional petitions against it by black activists were ignored for many years and seen by the puiblic as ridiculous. A non-blackface version did not last long and the show returned to its original format with larger audiences. After it was axed (as part of a rationalisation of variety programmes, not because of its content) a stage version with the same singers continued to tour Britain until about 1989. This is of the same period as the picture.

People are embarrassed about it now, especially the BBC, but it was of its time and most people did not see anything wrong with it. You cannot judge people of yesterday by the morality of today, even the same people.

Most of the people in bedsheets with white pointy hats were always Democrats.

You cannot possibly compare the Mitchell Minstrels with attending a fancy dress party as a lynching.

You can see the limits of light entertainment with the Dukes of Hazzard (car called General Lee and an almost all-white South) and Allo Allo (making fun of virtually all WWII stereotypes but no Jews and no camps)

The left are so stupid as to be beyond parody...
I agree with much if what you say but please don't lump the left in one group with these self righteous neoliberals. It's the same to lunping the right with the far right like the EDL.

They are completely different

You have to remember that there is a whole army of people from academia to politics to the media, that feed off race baiting and have a financial vested interest in keeping bitterness alive.
Of course there are still racists about but people like the author of this article shows that they are nowhere as prevalent or egregious as they used to be when he has to stoop to the level of Mary Poppins in a sooty face to earn his dollar.
