What course/university should Consider to help my skills as a 3D artist? Ive been self teaching myself 3D for a while and I'd like a career of it and I'm thinking of concept art or something similar but i know there are no specific courses. Could someone enlighten me on what courses would benefit me and what they would entail?

You look up what uni you want to go to that is 3D based and check what softwares they teach or use.
But usually it's Maya, Zbrush, Substance Painter & Designer or Mari, Photoshop, Arnold or Renderman.
It should be enough to do modelling, sculpting, uv, rigging, texturing, animating, lighting and rendering.

3D as in hands on building 3dimensional models? there are several courses and careers you can think about. How about stage design? Product design? this course looks great, last time I looked it was Screenskills accredited.

No i meant 3D as in computer generated imagery based things, in this case 3D animation or VFX. Like this:

If you meant 3D as in prop design and film studio work then i guess handsy creative skills, concept art/storyboarding, camera work and lighting would be of interest for you. Perhaps look into studio film based works, i suggest looking into "making of" or "behind the scenes" or "extras" on the production of x films. For example lord of the rings:

Your choice of interest seems to be the latter which the course linked looks to be what you would want to do. I'd suggest first of all however to look at the job market for prop design and film making as i've heard people struggle in the film studio industry, not saying it's bad but i would just like you to have your heads up. I'd also suggest you to look for internship or runner position during your summers in uni as experience would help you in your practical path a lot in your CV!

Off the top of my head, if you're referring to digital 3D modelling...

Short Courses:
-3D Animation (8 Weeks) at Escape Studios, London

3/4 Yr Degree Courses:
-3D Computer Animation & Modelling or 3D Games Art & Design at Hertfordshire University.
-Computer Animation Art & Design or Computer Animation Technical Arts at Bournemouth University
-Animation Production at Arts University Bournemouth
-Animation at Nottingham Trent University
-Animation at Ravensbourne University
-3D Animation and Games at Middlesex University

Most courses covering 3D modelling and animation will want to see proficiency in 2D artwork as well. I would personally suggest Hertfordshire, AUB and Bournemouth University (all very competitive, you'd be competiting with hundreds of other people for very few spaces!) as they have particularly good showreels and are well established

Hi JCurtisUK

Here at Ravensbourne University London we have a great Animation BA (Hons). Animation graduates often work as 3D/2D generalists as well as specialists in areas including concept, modelling, animation and VFX production. Our graduates are often employed in film and television, visual effects, advertising, post-production, apps and games.

We would love to welcome you to one of our Open Days, here you will get first-hand experience of the building and the course and be able to meet with the lecturers and students. If you would like to book to attend one of these, click here.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Thank you,
Mollie
