How to achieve a 9 in GCSE German?

Hi everyone,
I achieved a 7 in my mocks (3 marks of an 8), and I want to do A level German but my teacher says I shouldn't and that I would be lucky to get a 7 in the actual GCSE. How can I prove her wrong and get a 9?

Firstly, you would have to look at what you got in each of the papers. As if you achieved a higher mark in listening; compared to reading: then you will need to focus on your reading paper. I think speaking is the hardest as you are on the spot, especially when answering the surprise questions in the role play and photo card (AQA). I have recorded the questions, that our school uses (the person "Stimmt" book, it is widely used), I have put a link to them below, I would advise clicking download and downloading all of the audio files. Remind me nearer the time if you also want chapter 8.

I then use Anki to revise the cards, as I have recorded the answers also and it will play them back to me in my flashcards.

I did german GCSE and got a nine and my teacher had said the same thing (so much satisfaction when you prove them wrong)
I basically practised writing questions, listened to german music and used Memrise and Duolingo. Plus have some handy german phrases to bust out in your speaking and writing exams

Have a look on YouTube at The Ideal Teacher Language School, there's a video called: How To Get Full Marks in GCSE German Writing Exam (AQA 150 Words), there's a good list on there.

Love that you want to take German A-Level! To help with your question though try the following:

1.

Identify Weak Areas: Look at your mock exam feedback. Are there patterns in the mistakes? Focus on improving specific skills—grammar, vocabulary, or exam technique.

2.

Expand Vocabulary: Aim to learn 5-10 new words or phrases daily - use Quizlet/Anki and the exam specification vocab list to get started. Include complex structures like subordinating conjunctions (weil, obwohl) and topic-specific vocabulary to enhance your writing and speaking. There's a video at The Ideal Teacher Language School on YouTube called: GCSE GERMAN - HOW TO GET GRADE 9 (and improve your grades) have a look at that.

3.

Perfect Grammar: Make sure your use of tenses (present, past, future, conditional, past perfect etc) is accurate and varied. Add some complex structures to your written/spoken responses.

4.

Practise Speaking: Talk to yourself aloud daily - record yourself answering past speaking questions. Work on pronunciation, fluency, and the ability to incorporate advanced language structures.

5.

Write Regularly: Write 150-word essays on past paper topics, incorporating higher-level phrases and linking words (außerdem, dennoch). Get them checked by your teacher?

6.

Exam Technique: Practice past papers under timed conditions. Focus on reading the questions carefully and planning your answers for a few mins first. Learn to maximise marks by ensuring that you address each bullet point in the writing tasks fully.

With consistent effort and by challenging yourself to use advanced structures, you can definitely prove your teacher wrong and achieve that 9. Viel Erfolg!
