Universities which are ideal for Classics and (Ancient) History

Hi everyone -

I'm looking to apply to university in the future, most likely for classics and/or history.

So far, I've come up with 4 out of 5 universities I'm really interested in:

- University of St Andrews
- University of Durham
- University of Bristol
- University of Glasgow
- ...and the other, I'm still unsure.

I was set on Oxbridge for a while, but I'm starting to go off it as I don't think the ambiance of what seems like relentless stress and competition, limited social life etc. is for me - I attended a talk today and this was overwhelmingly what was conveyed. I received good mocks grades however, which may bring it back as an option on the table - I am looking for a high academic atmosphere. However, doubts creep into my mind as I begin to question the likelihood of getting in with a half-hearted attitude like this.

I was also keen on London for a while; SOAS and the likes, but expensive living costs in the city has also put me off this ,although I love the look of certain courses such as (joint) Hebrew and History, Middle Eastern history etc.

You see I have a bit of a dilemma - I like and dislike both options for particular reasons, and thus far London and Oxbridge seem to be on a par.

Am I missing great universities in the UK to explore as options for my ideal subject(s)? I don't want to look at Exeter as its really too far away from home for me.

Any recommendations and advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Liverpool has an excellent department for these subjects, and you can combines AH and Classics/Classical Studies, as well as taking archaeology or Egyptology options. Let me know if you have any questions about it!

I don't know if you've looked at Birmingham yet, but their Ancient History Course and modules really appealed to me! The others I liked are already on your list.
