Hi
I did an access course ( I’m a mature student) to get onto a nursing or midwifery degree. However I changed my mind and applied for physiotherapy instead. Today I got rejected because I needed more human biology in the modules that I studied on the access course. The modules I studied on the nursing access course were human biology, psychology and sociology. Sheffield Hallam rejected me as sociology wasn’t a requirement on the physiotherapy degree - more units in human biology were required! I’m so gutted!
All my other qualifications and work experience were fine..
now I’m wondering what my next step will be? I’m so confused? I still want to study physiotherapy- do I have a chance to get onto the course via clearing?
Also would a foundation year in human biology help me to get into physiotherapy for 2020?

There's universities that do foundation years in physiotherapy.

It says in the entrance requirements:

Access - approved Access to HE Diploma which must have a strong science bias (not social science), such as Access to science/natural science/applied science. Normally we require 15 credits at level 2 and 45 credits at level 3 of which at least 30 credits should be graded at distinction level. 15 of the level 3 distinction credits must be from biology units.

If you dont have any offers then you can try using UCAS extra and see if there are any unis stil offering physio, but I expect there will be enough in clearing as well.

Alternatively contact Sheffield again and ask what qualifications would be needed to satisfy their requirement. the smallest/ cheapest I can think of would be AS Biology.

It was my reading there was a strong chance you failed as soon as you put the application in because you did not meet the requirements which are stated on the course entry page. If you did not meet them then you were almost certainly going to be rejected. If you arent prepared to go anywhere else, then you just need to know what the min additional qualification is that they will accept. Hallam tend to be quite flexible. Its a shame you didnt contact them beforehand to get them to decide if they would accept you. Where its touch and go then its always worth building up a rapport with the course organiser so they know who you are when they get your application.

Just use next year to earn money, get experience and generally strengthen your application.

Hi Fitpro1234

Sorry you've had this experience. Not sure whether you have already spoken to the admissions team or not yet but I've just had a chat with them about your situation.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to get into Physiotherapy through clearing if you haven't met the science requirements. It is also unlikely that Physiotherapy will go into clearing as it is such a popular course. You could do some additional modules of human biology to get in.

Doing a foundation year will potentially help you get in for 2020, but double check with the uni before you sign up, to make sure.

Let me know if you have anymore questions,
Bridget

Hi! I'm applying to specialist physiotherapy program. My BS degree is also in physiotherapy. Do you have any suggestions for me to make my application more impact full? And what should be the appropriate length for personal statement as they haven't mentioned word limit. Any kind of help would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Tooba Bukhari

We have put together this crib sheet to help with writing Health and Social Care personal statements, you can have a read of it here: https://shu.ac.uk/campaigns/health-a...onal-statement

If you have any further questions on it I can link you up with the course leader and they'll be able to help.

Thanks
Bridget
