Hi, I am a mature prospective B.Sc. Hons Dialectics student . I have studied up to post graduate level from abroad and want to get GCSE Maths and English to meet the entry requirements of University. I do not want to sit in classroom and only interested in taking sitting in exam as a private / external Candidate. Can any one suggest me the fastest route to obtain the qualification. Should I opt IGCSE or GCSE? also recommend the examination board. I am residing in Edinburgh at the moment. Thanks

I recommend GCSE for maths and maybe IGCSE for English as some exam boards have a speaking assessment for GCSE english, which as a private candidate you may find difficult to arrange.

In terms of examining boards I would reccomend Edexcel for GCSE maths, however most boards cover the same content so it doesn't matter that much.

It is possible to study both qualifications within a year (know from personal experience) and you can take the exams in the May-June sitting at a private exam centre. You can use this tool to find private exam centres near you: https://cloudlearn.co.uk/ExamCentres

Thank you very much so it means IGCSE does not have any speaking content in it?

Should I take IGCSE first language? English is not my first language.

The IGCSE does have an optional speaking unit, however it is not compulsory. In terms of specs, I would recommend you take
IGCSE Edexcel English Language B, however you can take IGCSE English as a second language or IGCSE Edexcel English Language A if you want as they also have non-compulsory optional speaking units.

There are many three qualifications which are suitable for you, have a read through the specs and decide which one suits you best. The links are below.

IGCSE English as a second language: https://qualifications.pearson.com/e...uage-2017.html

IGCSE English Language A: https://qualifications.pearson.com/e...ge-a-2016.html

IGCSE English Language B: https://qualifications.pearson.com/e...ge-b-2016.html
