Are there restrictions on internet usage in halls of residence?

Okay, so in college we have WiFi, but some websites are blocked for a variety of reasons. I can obviously see the reasons behind such restrictions, given these websites are not appropriate for an educational establishment.

Do university halls of residence have similar restrictions in place, or is your access a bit more free?

Thanks, but that doesn't really answer my question, does it?

you'll have to check the internet t&cs for that particular university, there might be some traffic management restrictions but they don't tend to block much.

They don't normally actively block websites, but when you sign your halls contract, there may be a section about agrreing to not access illegal sites, or use their internet connection for any illegal activity.

It renders your question pointless though
Some are. Some aren't.

Personally, I never torrented UFC events more easily than in my first year -- because the ISP was a micro service and wasn't affected, iirc, by the high court writ or some statute (cannot remember which). But I have seen some unis impose some serious restrictions.

University internet doesn't really have any restrictions, it's not like school internet access. You might run into trouble if you do loads of torrenting or similar, but it's not like at school where every other website ends up behind a firewall. It's also really fast!

VPNs :borat:

I'd always go for a paid one though - can sometimes get some good 3-year deals and they're far superior to the free ones.

Once in school my friend emailed me porn. The filters could not pick it up. I opened the email in my IT class and showed it to one guy. Soon quite a few guys were crowded round grinning and smiling. A girl noticed the commotion and came to see what the fuss was about. She ran straight to the teacher and grassed me up. The teacher was not impressed and sent me to the head IT technition. I said I had no idea it was porn [lie] and that my friend emailed it to me without my consent. He told me to tell my friend not to do it again. and that was the last I heard of it.

No idea if uni's are blocked, ...but this topic just reminded me of that incident.......

I had a similar thing happen. I actually showed the video my friend sent me to the girl I was sitting next to because I started puberty late(I was 12) and was just curious what was going on and wanted her opinion too. I was too young to be embarrassed or turned on. I blamed it all on my mate when the teachers told my parents ...it worked.

Lmao back in the day one of my friend was watching dead or alive trailer on the school PC and he actually got banned from signing on

next IT lesson the teacher asked why he can't log on, and asks him to go ask the technician and he's just stuttering like an autist :rofl2:

Thats good to hear, thanks for your answers. I'm thinking either Bristol or Cardiff.
Should be fine as long as you occasionally close the pornhub tab

Use a VPN for torrenting and it will be all fine. Read this detailed blog and you will understand the consequences too if you do not use a VPN. Worth a read!

Be aware, the TSR mods may see this as advertising and ban you :colone:
