the two little boys in the end scene begging; whatever becomes of them in the book? and was that scene symbolic of a more important theme? I thought is was a very sad scene.

I can't remember them actually being in the book. It could be symbolic of how the cycle of Valjean's life is starting over again.

It was obviously meant to mean something.
I thought it was something to do with the struggle of life and how without the older boy [ the one that was shot] to look out for them, then they were going to have a tough life.
It was also a contrast with Valjean and how he made a difference by saving Cosette.
Which then opens up the idea of people making a difference and the continuing need for such people.
