The Student Room Group

Got an offer! Are there any current/ex students who can advise?

I have an unconditional to study BA Music Production at Leeds College of Music starting September 2019. (I am waiting for other offers but very seriously considering LCoM.)

When I went for the open day, I absolutely loved it, there was a great atmosphere and people seemed enthusiastic!

Since getting the offer, I've looked through lots of different sites to try and get a full picture of LCoM and there a some negative reviews that often referr to there being hardly any student scene or opportunities to meet people - as a social person I would not enjoy 3 years of isolation - and the teaching being unenthusiastic, not well communicated and vague.

That being said, the current SU seems to be trying hard, and reviews of this current year are all excellent but equally we are only just in the second semester.

I wondered if anybody, students old or new, could give their opinion?

I really want to go to LCoM and love it but I want to be as sure as possible that it's right for me!

Also, any other people applying say hello!!

How did the auditioning process go? I've got my interview next week for the course and I want to know what to expect.

For Production? I didn’t get asked to attend an interview but I’ve taken a few years out so I already have all my exam results etc so maybe that’s why?

I wish I could be more help but I really hope it goes well for you!

Let me know how it goes!

Hey! I'm a Classical student at LCoM and absolutely love it!! There are so so many opportunities to meet people and make friends from other courses too! I have friends in production, jazz, songwriting and composer courses too so you just mix really and everyone at LCoM is so so friendly and welcoming (one of the reasons why I chose to study there).
The teaching is really great. I find all my lecturers and instrumental teachers really supportive and knowledgeable and you just become friends haha! If you're worried about things being vague, it's probably because you're expected to do extra research outside of lectures.
I think the student scene is fab personally...Leeds is fantastic for gigs etc and nightlife and the Student Union do put on events occasionally...as you say they are trying to make this more frequent though. Leeds is such a busy city there's so much to do! Although there are not many societies to join (you can set up your own though), anyone from LCoM can join clubs and societies from the surrounding unis in Leeds like Uni of Leeds, Leeds Beckett etc etc so it'd be worth going to their freshers fairs when you start!! Plus when you move in to your uni halls, you'll make friends with people there too.

I hope this helps!! Any other questions feel free to inbox me

This is really helpful, thank you so much!

I’m really glad to hear there’s lots of cross course interaction and that you’re enjoying it all!

It makes sense if there’s outside research too.

I look forward to potentially joining you there!
