And would it depend on the course? I don't wanna waste a choice on my UCAS form if I'm not going to be able to get in

It depends on the course, your predicted grades and the strength of your UCAS personal statement. Although many people say your statement is a waste of time and not worth it, decent unis like QMUL do look at it, so put time in to it before applying.I was predicted ABB (the exact requirements for the course), and was given a reduced offer of BBB, due to my statement being strong. I was then put on an outstanding potential award scheme, invited for an interview, and subsequently got an unconditional if I firmed it, which I did. This was for geography, quite a competitive course, and I know the scheme runs on about 10 other courses including History and Law. Although I met the entry requirements exactly, my UCAS statement was strong, which ultimately led to me getting an unconditional. My point is, if you have a strong statement, meet the requirements or are just one grade off, and apply for the right course (i.e don't apply for medicene with a rubbish BMAT and predicted BBC), then you should get an offer. The more competitive the course, the less likely they will both lower entry requirements or accept you if you're predicted lower than the asking grades. Your statement is imperative if looking at getting a reduced offer. Also, although it may sound stupid, don't worry about 'wasting' 1 choice too much, because at the end you will have to narrow it down to 2 anyway, so as long as you get at least 3 you should be fine really.
