I'm going on my first dinner date with this guy , and it made me wonder, in general, who should pay for the meal? Or should it be split? I don't think there's a right or wrong answer here, I personally think it's a decision for the two people on the date and they can decide whatever they like, but I just want to know what everyone else's views are

The one that invited the other as their gues or if the person insists on split then split it.

I would say it's only fair if everyone goes expecting to pay their share, but if one person really wants to make the someone feel special by paying for them then that's really sweet

Unless they live in poverty, then it’s just cruel

If they are aware of your financial situation then when they invite you on a date they would probably say its on them. You shouldn't go on a date with someone expecting them to pay for you though. If they haven't offered to pay and you can't afford to go then I think you should suggest something free instead, like going to a local museum or on a walk through a local park.

Split the bill unless one person is in much better financial straits than the other.

Whoever made the invite for the date should be willing to pay for the date.
If the person who agreed to go on the date wants to split the bill, that's fine.
But if the invite issuer claims to have forgotten their wallet or asks for a loan, that should be seen as a big red flag.

If you were friends before then split, if he’s asked you out he should at least insist on paying full (it’s your call if you wanna split. I’m sure he’d be expecting to pay full though), if you asked him out he’d probably insist on paying for himself at least and maybe even you if he’s had a good time.
