You need to chase your referee to respond back.

Like the previous poster, my referee hasn't gotten anything on their end.

Have some of you guys started on the second module today or is there a break in between the first one and the next?

The module started yesterday, so no break for us. We should get a two week break after this module.

Hi, I had my referee forward them a letter of reference on
[email protected]

There was no reply for like 5 days. I sent them a DM on twitter and i was contacted in a couple of hours regarding confirmation that they have well received the LoR from my referee on
[email protected]

Take it to twitter, they are quite fast to reply there.

Seems a bit silly you have to go to all that effort for something that should be done automatically anyway... but cheers, will probably have to do that.

I do not think that the topics and course content are badly organized. It is just that the teaching is not that good. They covered a lot of topics from CLRS. The topics selection was nice, but there was a lack of videos and lecture. So, students have to self-study a lot. Not everything is bad about the course. The price is great. University is well-reputed. The curriculum is good as well. They asked for around 18.5/19 hrs per week. It is good that they are not just giving good grades to everyone. You have to submit quality assignments to get marks. The students taking part in the program are really great.

The only downside is the explanation of the topics covered in not that good. You have to put a lot of time on self-study to understand the content.

I definitely want to specialise in Data Science / Analytics as I hold a degree in Finance and I need those skills to combine them with my degree.

Thanks for your answer!

Ah ok that’s not too bad then.

I do not think that everything is bad either. But I know what I need.

After consultation with the University of Glasgow, this study has unfortunately been dropped, because it is very intense statistics and mathematics, which I would like, but I would have to be three years younger.

My decision now lies between UoL - Data Science & FT and Du Montfort University - Data Analytics.

With Data Analytics, the only question is whether Python is taught. I am waiting for an answer. The program is ranked 4th (Subject Ranking). I do not like that York indicates that the study is completed online / distannce learning. As if their program is not worth a lot.

I tried dmu’s intelligent systems MSc but quit because the software they told us to use was made redundant and the module teach didn’t care...

Oracle, SQL processing using SAS, Cloud X, Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), Apache Spark, SAS Enterprise Miner and SASBI.

Hello,

I hope that you are well.

I have some information in regards to your query about whether Python is taught on the Data Analytics MSc course at De Montfort University. The modules will be taught using Oracle, SQL processing using SAS, Cloud X, Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), Apache Spark, SAS Enterprise Miner and SASBI.

To find out some further information in regards to this course, please follow this link: https://www.dmu.ac.uk/study/courses/postgraduate-courses/data-analytics-msc-degree/data-analytics-msc-degrees.aspx.

I hope that this helps. If you have anymore questions then please do not hesitate to give us a shout!

Take care!

Laura

I started it in January 2018 and quit after the first semester as the quality was bad, the lectures taught you no code just theory, the exercises were bad too, plus I had no computing experience, from what I can see York is much better value for money imo. Glasgow looks to me like your best bet for what’s you want to do

So I'm approaching the end of the first week of the course and am highly considering leaving the program. It seems to me that the method of teaching is dictating from a textbook and setting tasks from said textbook. This is fair enough, but I feel like there are far more effective, efficient and cheaper ways of learning than this.

As a person who has been through several CS MSc’s and quit let me tell you that this one at York is probably as good s it’s going to get in terms of teaching. Other unis don’t even give you lecture slides or weekly readings, you maybe jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Hi guys, I am interested in starting the Msc in September. I have had an exchange of emails with the university and scrolled through this thread but there's one thing that is unclear about the course structure. Can some time elapse between one module and the other? Will I be able to, say, complete the first module, wait a couple of months then start the second one? I will be working a fairly demanding job in a few months and I am not sure I can commit the 19+ hours p/w needed (also considering that I do not have a CS background). Does anyone know anything about this/ is anyone in the same situation? I apologise if this has already been covered but I did not have the time to read through the whole thread. Thanks

Has anyone had any experience with or heard anything about the Glasgow Data Analytics MSc? I've just spoken to one of the course leaders and it sounds brilliant. As someone mentioned previously it's a lot more heavy on the statistics side of things which I'd say is a good thing, it just seems a lot more thorough. There's also the option to complete it in 2 years.

I wrote with the programme director and he gave me following information:

*It is a quite intensive MSC since they spend some time on the mathematical/statistical techniques and their understanding.
*They recomend the "standard" route as the 2-year route is very demanding (unleast you have a lot of time)
* There are three exams and the rest are projects/essays or something similar
* The 2-years route is only for people who have a lot of free time and have been working in mathematics/statistics & programming (from 70 ppl just 3 took the fast route)
* There is a starter course to deepen your mathematical knowledge before starting the programme.

It is indeed a very interessting programme. but it is one of the hardest. You have to keep in mind that the Glasgow programme is made by their statistic/math department.

They also send me a link where I could see some handbooks. Very tough to be honest and I was very good in maths/stat

Hope I could help you. The programme director is very kind. There is no special bachelor recommended.

Glasgow’s course looks sweet, I think the mistake that people make with York’s MSc is that they think it’s a data science degree. That’s what I thought at the beginning but actually it’s basically just a normal computer science degree with a focus on machine learning and data mining. The problem that I see with Glasgow is that there is no module that focuses on algorithms and data structures, if you want to progress into serious AI you really need a strong get grasp of algorithm theory, it’s pretty much the most important module in the york msc imo.

Not trying to upset people but having worked as a software developer for some years, and now moving into this area myself, I get the impression a lot of employers (in the UK at least) do not respect a distance learning program at all, like it counts for nothing, not worth the paper it's written on even if it's reputable university. Some employers might actually value it but it's still not respected as much as actually attending the university in person.

I think it's very wrong of them to be like this because the students are probably just as capable, since it takes more dedication to do distance learning alongside other commitments.

not trying to scare or upset people but just giving my honest view based on my experiences talking with recruiters and applying for jobs/going for interviews myself...
