BDA if it's not your first module, otherwise ADS.

I start in June and have been told that my first module will be Algorithms and Data Structures. Wasn't that the module you (or possibly someone in the forum) were saying requires a fair bit of coding?

I'm in ADS and so far so good. It's the 21st and I started on the 6th, almost done with the second and final programming assignment. I've managed to keep up with the class as well. I've spent about 15 hours a week so far I'd say. Pace is fast and if you have never done programming before you'll need to put in extra effort. The key text is easy to understand but there is significantly less video content than I expected. The class notes do explain the concepts pretty well though and I've found the labs to be interesting and help you in understanding the key concepts. Tutor has been good at answering questions so far.

If you are expecting this course to be like a course on Udemy, you'll be in for a nasty surprise. The video quality of this course is terrible in comparison. For a positive, a few years ago the research quality at this university for computer science was on par with Oxford.

Out of curiosity, for someone new to coding would you guys recommend Python or Java if one were to prepare for this course? From what I understand, both are taught on it but Python is easier to get to grips with first.

Hey, I've applied to this course last week how long does it take to reply? Does everyone get into this course - I am concerned as there was no need for a cover letter.Has anyone done the cs50 course on edx? How does this structure of learning compare to that one? I hope it's similar.

That edx course looks like the MIT lectures that are on Coursera and YouTube. Unfortunately, this has been mentioned several times, this course is nothing like those courses in terms of content delivery. You are going to be extremely disappointed as the video content is terrible, as the course relies heavily on students reading and learning the material.

From what I’ve seen of this course, I don’t think the AI content is good enough to give you a sufficient ground in AI for PhD level work.

I'd go further and say the AI content **100% for sure won't** prepare you for a PhD, or even for a job, in AI. That being said though, this MSc is sufficient for entry into a PhD afterwards, at York or elsewhere. I think that someone who did the Data Analytics specialty, for example, with what they've learned in the program plus some addition self-study, could be ready for a Data Science / Analytics oriented PhD program afterwards. Same for Cyber Security if that's your specialty. I'm definitely keeping my eyes on scholarshipsdb and other websites as I progress through the program for PhD programs I might consider applying to with this degree under my belt.

I wouldn't worry about the cover letter as it's not predictive about your future success on this course or any other. If you meet the qualification requirement, then you will more than likely get in.

slightly disconcerting to hear this to be honest. I suppose because it is such a new course has meant that they haven't allocated as much attention to supplemental video tutorials to the text. Would you say the quality of the text that they provide is good enough to replace associated video tutorials?

Yeah, sadly you’re 100% correct. I think to prepare for a PhD in AI it heavily depends on the MSc dissertation we choose for this course, I think if you choose an AI heavy topic and then self teach yourself using udemy/coursera then you can get away with doing an AI PhD providing you get a good grade.

No. The notes they supply, if any, will at best get you a score between 60% and 70% in the assessment or exam. I'm currently doing BDA and the notes provided are so light, you would likely get a fail if you used them and did none of the required reading. You will need to read the sections that are specified in the course and make your own notes, supplementing this with any other material. You are paying for that piece of paper at the end that states you meet their standard, which unfortunately means you have to jump through their hoops to get it.

In case you don't want to do all the twelve modules, but you want to get some kind of certificate or diploma, that can be done too.

Well I'm currently aiming to go the full way in completing the MSc, but there seems to be a good amount of constructive feedback also. But in all fairness, as you say, if the material provided is sufficient to provide a grade of between 60% and 70% (albeit, at best), then surely it is sufficient no?

Oh nice, thats positive to hear! How have you found the programming element? When I spoke with their admissions team, ADS and AP are programming heavy which I suppose is what I was looking for. Are you from a tech background yourself?

Did anyone get their line manager to write a ref? Could you please share what was written?
Mine is the director of marketing and he is asking me what to put as he wants to do it correctly but I'm struggling to come up with how to relate working in graphic design to computer science.

Something about hard working, motivated and a problem solver.

My ref told me to write it myself and she would just sign it and stamp it

Hi,
Just read the complete thread. Thank you to anyone who has provided extra information!

A few questions:
1) I will be starting in March and am looking forward to it. Any one else here starting at the same time?

2) In one of the posts someone posted the activities for the ADS module, which is already helpful. Would someone in AP mind doing the same? This would be much appreciated.

3) I work 4 days (full time compressed hours) and have my study day each Friday. As far as I have read the assignments are due on Mondays - is this correct? How far in advance do you get the dates for the exam window?

Thank you 😊

3. Mondays have been the day for assignment hand-ins, so far. You know the date of the exam once you have access to the module.
