Two ships, X and Y, leave port at 1500 hours. Ship X travels at a constant speed of 20km per hour on a bearing of 060°. Ship Y travels at a constant speed of 15km per hour on a beating of 145°. Calculate the distance between A and B at 1700 hours.

Whats A and B? I thought the ships were X and Y? Anyway it helps if you draw out what is happening. Draw out path x in which the boat travels at a speed of 20km/h for 2 hours. This is at a bearing of 60 degrees from port. Then draw one for y, in which the boat travels for the same two hours but with 15km/hr speed and it is 145 degrees bearing.
Next you can see that 85degree angle is formed between both paths. with path x having distance of 40km while y is with 30km.
Now you can just use a^2=b^2+c^2-2bc(cos(A)) to get the distance. The answer is around 48km.
