I've got a fair few friends at St. Andrews and I used to live in Kirkcaldy which is fairly close, so I know the place quite well.
The town is particularly small. It gets ridiculously quiet at times - you should see it in early January when the weather's too crap for golf and quite a lot of students have gone home for the holidays. Particularly in the university accommodation the rent is very high. The atmosphere in the union has always been crap in my experience - dismally quiet on weeknights. As someone else mentioned the pubs close far too early!
That said, I do quite like the place in moderation, but it can't compare to Edinburgh or Glasgow in terms of the nightlife, special events, concerts, museums, etc. etc. According to my referee I would have had an alright shot at getting in for English but I don't feel that St. Andrews is for me at all.
Hopefull
Long before I had any desire or idea to attend University I visited St Andrews through work commitments. I distinctly remember standing in the Raisin awaiting my turn for service.
Sometimes you can expect the occasional dodgy pint, especially if it's suspiciously cheap (beer and burger £3.50), but I swear on my life I have never had such an awful pint of Tennent's as the one I had in The Raisin a few years ago.

I am only here because it's the best uni in Scotland.

...maybe because you got it in The Raisin? It's a dump...one of the few pubs I went in once (during a pub crawl) and never wanted to go in again. If you'd been in the Vic or Lafferty's, it would have been much better
