I am undecided whether to firm Queen mary, which came 46th in the rankings for the course that I want to do,or Goldsmiths which came 22nd. Queen mary is a russel group and more well known, but didn't do as well as Goldsmiths.

Go to the one that you liked/felt was the best fit for you, the most - you have to be happy where you study. It helps if your firm choice is the higher offer, as that gives you a back up if your exams don't go as well as expected. Also, Goldsmiths is still fairly well known.

QM just gets slumped in national rankings but has been steadily consistent internationally. When you look at rankings always look at both National and Global tables. These numbers are already arbitrary enough.

Neither ranking nor "prestige" make a difference for anything unless you want to go into investment banking or management consultancy, in which case both are bad options because neither is a target uni.
For any other job they don't care where you studied, so just pick whichever course you prefer.

A Pokemon MSc from Cambridge will be a lot funnier than a Pokemon MSc with 1 year placement at Oxford Brookes. Thus, Cambridge prestige wins this round.
