1. What are difficulties in testing Brittle materials (Polymers)?

2. How does changing cross-head speeds effect the varying strain in the ultimate tensile strength UTS? (High Density Polyethylene- tested at three different speeds, 10mm/sec, 50mm/sec and 1mm/sec) thanks.

Thanks

You might be better off asking this in the engineering forum.

I'd say it's because brittle materials fracture when the critical stress intensity is reached- depends on the flaw size present in the material (for example PMMA inherent flaw size is between 0.07 and 0.15mm). Textbooks and probably your course material should show the effect of strain rate sensitivity for different polymers.
