M529 – Cheshire Police Motion 2019, TSR Labour Party
Recently the Cheshire Police Force have been caught discriminating in their recruitment practice and their previous chief constable had 'taken legal advice about breaking the law', about doing this.

This house urges the government to investigate the hiring practices of the Cheshire Police Force and ensure they fully comply with the law.

Yeah - positive discrimination is a disgusting practice and it is the job of the government to prevent this cancer from infiltrating public sector organisations like police forces.

I should clarify that this motion does not condemn positive discrimination, but seeks to address the unlawful behaviour of the Cheshire Police Force to ensure that the current laws can be applied in the correct, intended manner going forward.

I think my party leader's phrasing is rather stronger than the situation merits, but I too see this as evidence that positive action can be discriminatory in itself. I have said before and I'll say it again that everyone should be judged on their merits, and not by their backgrounds.

With regards to the actual motion, I don't really see what it does...

It does exactly what a motion is supposed to do, which is not very much at all.

I don't have a reason to vote against at this point so a provisional aye.

This one is entirely perfunctory. I make sure that when I write a motion, it actually calls for a tangible action, I don't know about you.

Sensible motion, 'positive discrimination' is still wholely unfair.

Although this motion doesn't actually call on the government to do much, I will still vote aye.

Is "conduct an investigation" not tangible?:hmmmm:

I would imagine something of the kind would happen by default.

This motion assumes that it is Cheshire Police alone that discriminates against people for being "normal" rather than it being a common practice and as such is somewhat narrow.

Abstain.

This is a vague and poorly written motion that is not specific and requires one to read the external link to find out the subject matter. I agree with that subject matter, but that does not compensate sufficiently for the fact that somebody took about five minutes to write it before chucking it out.
