Why?
If so, what should we spend it on?
If not, what should we cut?

No, leave it as it is. Also scrap trident and leave NATO. Neither are fit for purpose.

Amount of funding is appropriate for what we use our forces for.

Amount of waste in the MoD, in procurement, in bad PFIs, in top--heavy management structures...is awful. That's where billions could be saved and re-invested in wages, support services, and badly needed new accommodation for personnel.

Not at the moment, until we get the economy sorted out and have a strategic review on where we should be spending money.

An increase to 2.5% of GDP would be beneficial but unlikely in the current climate.

As Drewski says, accommodation (and general infrastructure at military bases across the board I'd add to that) is in a bit of a state at the moment. My previous unit had no hot water for over 6 months; they fixed that but apparently some of the SLA there hasn't had hot water in approx a year. Even accommodation that has been refurbished recently is too small for purpose in most cases.
Retention of personnel is certainly an issue too at the moment and this seems unlikely to be fixed without a lot more money spent on it - both recruiting and training the new pers and paying them well enough to keep them in.

The MOD has been going all out for some big ticket items recently - the QE carriers, new subs, new destroyers, F-35 Lightning, P-8, new AWACS etc but now needs to back those purchases up by actually investing in bases that house these pieces of equipment. Plus, the Army could really do with upgraded MBTs too, at the very least.

It should be increased by around double.

As mentioned lots of things are in a state in the MoD estate and we don't even have the support ships to keep our aircraft carriers safe.

You have not been invaded since 1066, nobody has interest to invade UK, it would be difficult and the consewquences in international trade terrible.

I would like it to be as I do worry that our armed forces are so cut they wouldn't be fit for purpose and as others have said better salaries and kit and accommodation would be great for them. But equally it wouldn't be the first thing I spent money on if I was in government what with the NHS being the way it is and waiting times etc

The Royal Navy is in the transition period at the moment between singleton Frigate/Destroyer deployments and Task Group deployments. With the current number of escorts we have, we will be able to cover our standing commitments as well as provide a Task Group for the QE carriers. As the 8 ASW T23 get replaced one for one by T26, this will continue

I think that we should increase it because we can't rely on others to protect us or help us out that much if anything happened, also if something happened then other countries would focus more on protecting their own country than helping others. The military does a lot of good things around the world. We need to keep up with the advancement of weapons and ships to protect ourselves and all of our territories around the world.

It should though be better managed to minimise wastage by reorganising the structure and giving everyone all of the equipment that they need to do the job. We have one of the best militaries in the world and we need to keep it up there if not improve upon it
