Hi - sorry you haven't had a response to this yet. I'm just going to bump the thread in the hope that someone sees this and can help

Why do I do this?

The Universities forums get a lot of questions that are unanswered. This is often because the OP's thread got missed - bumping threads gives them another lease of life and frequently results in someone seeing it and being able to respond

If you would like to help with unanswered questions check out the first part of the list here and don't forget the second part of the list here.

Or if you have questions, get in touch with Puddles the Monkey.

Hi, I’ve put YSJ as my first choice to study Psychology Sept 2019. How do you find the course? What are the lectures like? What’s York like for student night life? Are you doing a study abroad year? Any other information you might think is useful for me to know would be greatly received! Sorry for so many questions!!

Hi,

Firstly, I would like to say YSJ is a great place for the student experience. The courses are flexible in the sense that the lecturers listen to your opinion. Overall, the courses are good. The lectures are good. Yet again, if you give feedback then they will get better. Although, this depends on the lecturer. The night life is brilliant. Revolution and Fibbers are the go to clubs! Salvation is also good for deals on drinks. Just make sure you bring old clothes for events, such as the paint party. If you are doing the pure psychology C800 course, you have an opportunity to go to Pennsylvania for the first semester of your second year. Although, I decided not to do it due to the cost of health insurance.

If you have any other questions, please ask.

hellooo, sorry i only just found this post!! i’m doing psych (c800) 2019 and i have a few questions.

1) how is it taught? like, is it mostly lectures or group work or whatever... i have a major fear of presentations so i’m wondering how common these are!!

2) is this a popular course? how many people (roughly) are on the course?

3) what is your favourite 1st year module?

thank you!!

Hi Echomeg,

The course is taught through a series of lectures, seminars ,workshops and PASS sessions. I have only had 8-10 hours of contact time. However, people don't realise that to get a high mark overall you need to match the contact hours with revision and research/further reading. The assessments are varied and include anything from presentations to exams to academic posters. I have carried out one group presentation this year for Personality and Individual Differences.

There was a lot of people of the course at first. I would say 150. However after freshers people drop out, some people realise they do not like the course and others don't make it to second year due to grades or other circumstances. More people drop out by time you get to your final year and you specialise which makes the groups smaller.

My favourite first year module is Foundations of Human Development or Developmental Psychology. There are two parts to the module chapters critiques and a Moodle quiz. I achieved 75% on the critiques and 87% on the quiz. Overall I achieved a 81% for the module, which is a first. This is my favourite module because my goal is to become a Developmental-Clinical Psychologist.

I hope this covers everything. Please tell me if I have missed anything or if you have anymore questions?
Are you going to YSJ?

Ben
