Bristols fairly easy to reach by train, I don't think Bath is though. I haven't heard of anyone going to those places either, most stick to the nightclubs we have here. It would probably work out as a very expensive night to go to Bristol for a night out - and you'd have to make sure you were around for the last train back...

To go to Bristol Temple Meads (the station you want for the centre) then you're looking at just over an hour on the train from St.Davids. It'll cost £13.85 for a return if using a Young Persons Railcard. You'll be approx 5-10 mins away from the main shopping bit then about 10-20 mins walk to the waterfront or Park St. Park St is a bit more studenty than the central bit because that's where Bristol University is located, and there is also a museum there to pass time and get your £13.85 worth.

In regard to Bath, you would still need to stop off at Bristol Temple Meads, then you would hop on to another service from Temple Meads to Bath Spa. I'm unsure of cost but it'll probably be about £15-16 on a YP Railcard. In regard to time it is probably only 10 mins from BTM to Bath Spa but then you will need to wait around for it to arrive, which could be something like 20 mins. I'm not too sure on the details with that. Neither am I aware of where Bath Spa station is, so cannot say where it is in regard to Bath city centre but I am pretty sure it is near the city centre and not the similarly named university which is out on the edges of the city and not practically placed to be the city's main train station.

If you want a bus from Exeter to Bristol, you're going to need the national express which will take aaaages. Train takes about an hour to Bristol, no changes, but as has been said, you're still not in the city centre near clubs.
If you have a quick driver to hand, you could cut the time way down. Bad times for the driver though.

I wouldn't say so.
Probably an hour and 20 mins driving from Exeter centre to Bristol centre at the least. At best you'll be matching the train. Even if you include factors such as getting into the city centre from Temple Meads you still have to consider the aspect of parking and then walking from there. I find the car parks surrounding Park St to be good, especially at weekends when I tend to be home in Bristol. The central ones, particularly the NCP ones, tend to be very expensive. The Galleries car park isn't as bad though, is a bit more reasonable and one of the most accessible car parks in Bristol. In reference to parking in Bath, it isn't fun.

I don't really see any point.. unless you live in Bristol (like me) and have a place to stay the night.

Bristol isn't London where they have world famous clubs that are always open to 7am.

I guess its worth it for a specialist night though. General clubbing isn't, however.

I wouldn't aim to travel to Bath for a night out, its ****. Maybe a day trip for the roman baths etc but not for nightlife.

I'm hoping, if I get into Exeter (!) that I will be able to visit friends at Bath and Bristol unis, so the timing/distance doesnt sound that bad which is good

Yeah the train services between Exeter and Bristol/Bath are very good. All trains to Bristol are direct, and there are a fair few direct trains to Bath.
All made much cheaper with a YP railcard, although they're not even that expensive if you book a few days in advance. I can get from Exeter to Chippenham (one stop further on from Bath) for £4 (£8 for two singles) if I book 2/3 weeks in advance.
im in a coma

Do Exeter students go to these places for nights/days out? How easily reached are these cities by bus/train? They are such great places and was wondering whether students use them much or whether most of the action just happens in Exeter and on the dartmouth moors :P

To be honest, I didn't know the nightlife in Bath was that 'happening' really, I always saw it as a more peaceful, tranquil kind of place, much akin to Tunbridge Wells! (Although actually come to think of it T. Wells is quite a surprising night out.)

Can't say I've ever been to Bristol for the nightlife, not for lack of trying though. I've got a few friends up there at UWE and keep meaning to go up for a weekend or so, I've been told the nightlife and various clubs are pretty good!

Travelling wise, never done it on public transport. But from St. Germans Road to Ashley Down Road took just over an hour, if I remember correctly. Thats factoring in going about a steady 85-90 on the M5. But of course if you want to drive Miss Daisy then of course it'll take longer :P

The 'action' in Exeter isn't at all like that you find in London, and even (as it quite surprised me) not much like that in Brighton either. I found I got bored of Arena, Mambos et al quite quickly and most weekends were spent in Halls drinking which was more fun (and cheaper, heh :P)

The clubs aren't great but its a night out I suppose, although they of course can't be compared to the bigger towns / cities at all for the nightlife.
depending on your taste in music, exeter has the best nightlife regionally (better than plymouth, taunton, bath and bristol). bristol is soooooooo overrated. bath is very pretty and if you like ale pubs then head there. taunton doesn't have anything going for it, and plymouth is too rough and naff for me (like bristol, only with more marines and navy guys)
I live in Bath, and recently have been venturing to Bristol more often.

I have to say that I wouldn't go out of my way to go to either of them. Especially not Bath which is hardly renown for its nightlife.

Just stick to Exeter I guess. The people you're with makes or breaks a night out, the loction helps a little but isn't essential.
