A lecturer at my university did some research on this. He looked at various factors (e.g. IQ, Class, previous school whether public or state, parents education, A-level grades, GCSE's etc) and he found that the best predictor of whether someone would graduate with a 1st was if they achieved a 1st in their first year.
I know someone who got an average of 45%, 50% in his first two years, and then got 78% in his third year, and ended up with a first because of the year weighting (25% weighted for 2nd year, 75% weighted for 3rd year).

But that was a science subject so....
