How much spending money would you recommend? Is 5k enough for a semester or the year? This would include eating out and traveling and any other entertainment? If my housing, tuition, and on-campus food are already paid for. I am from the US and schools are more expensive. Schools here run 20k a year for perspective. This is on the cheaper side. I am looking at attending Royal Holloway.

Hi prosector15,

The cost of living can vary greatly depending on you as an individual. We do have a rough breakdown of the average living costs for a postgraduate student on our website here, but what we've found is that a single person on campus could spend a minimum of £10,000 a year which includes accommodation and tuition fees for a home student.

I was also an international student from the United States so I definitely understand what it's like to plan on study abroad. If you haven't already, you may wish to factor in (if required) visa costs as these are sometimes forgotten about when budgeting. To help with finances during your studies, there are plenty of part time jobs on campus and in the local area. There is a part-time jobs fair at the beginning of the first term, which is a great opportunity to see what's available. When I was a student I worked as a Student Ambassador for Royal Holloway in my second year and at a local coffee shop in my third year. Working helped me fund my grocery shopping, some travel and entertainment. Students are limited to 20 hours a week and this is the same limitation usually put on student visas as well. I found that this amount worked well alongside my studies while still giving me time to participate in a number of societies on campus.

I hope this is helpful, but if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Susana
