So next year I’ve got the choice to either do nat5 Italian or HSK Mandarin which I’ll do for 2 periods a week so my timetables filled. What one do you think would be best/most beneficial?

Just for background I’m planing to go to university after school and do a degree in accountancy and international accounts. This year I’m doing 5 highers in maths, english, history, music and physics and next year I’m going on to do advanced higher maths and history, and higher accountancy and business. Also I’ve already got a language as I have nat5 French at grade A.

Italian is easier, but I imagine Mandarin has more practicality as it's more widely spoken. It depends really on the kind of environments you can see yourself working in in the future.

I would honestly recommend doing whichever one you're most interested in as you'll probably get more out of it. Since you've already done Nat 5 French, you'll be able to pick up Italian easier. That said, Mandarin could be interesting and in the future, if you ever wanted to pick up Mandarin again or work internationally, the HSK course could be a good stepping stone.

Just remember one thing - Nat 5 in either Italian or Mandarin won't even bring you close to fluency whatsoever, especially in Mandarin. They're both beginner courses as far as language courses go.

Ergo, Italian because it's similar to French and you'd be able to pick it up relatively fast. Mandarin because it's more beneficial for international business and would be a good stepping stone if you ever wanted to consider learning the language in the future.

As an aside, I did a degree in French, Spanish and Japanese. My AH subjects were English, History and Spanish and I've done Higher French as well.

Whichever you'd prefer to learn...If you don't plan on taking it further, a Nat 5 language isn't realistically going to be of much benefit in that (unless you go significantly over and above the course requirements) you won't really be able to use it as you'll still be very much a beginner. My advice is to with the one that you'd like to learn most
