They reliably show what they say they do (except for the complete subject tables which have a different weighting applied to the published methodology).

That doesn’t mean that the universities at the top or bottom are good/bad. Just that they’re good/bad *at the metrics used and combined using that methodology*.

If you create a table of restaurants by number of chairs it won’t tell you which will serve the food you like best. But that doesn’t mean the Chair Table is an inaccurate ranking of chair numbers.
