I'll be applying for primary education (5-11) for 2020 start. I've heard that you need to do the skills tests before starting the course but at what point should I do them?

You can book the skills tests after starting your UCAS application (so October 2019, once you've got an applicant number), but you must have submitted your application (including referees) before you can actually take the tests. Your provider/university will probably set an earlier deadline (I needed mine done by the Easter prior to starting in September), but otherwise you need to have passed them before starting the course.

As username1230881, you can only take the skills tests after you have submitted your applications (including references). However, you can start having a look at the Department of Education website and familiarise yourself with the specification if you want to.
