No, society has a system of supply and demand on Human Resources, private schools are a privilege which I for one enjoy, whilst some argue they are unfair that is their purpose, those who go to a private school should expect a better quality education and better opportunities to set them aside for the higher careers within life with a higher pay, and those unfortunate to not should make do with the baseline opportunities within life.

Without them we wouldn’t have the entrepreneurial people or the political leaders today, if anything private schools should have greater investment from the state and become more exclusive, however this is just my thesis.

See I was ready to agree until you said the line I've highlighted in bold, I shall say no thanks I will not settle for baseline opportunities within life. Being poor doesn't mean you have to stick to 'baseline opportunities' that's just silly. People can achieve through merit from comprehensives it is possible just harder in a lot of cases such as a person at a local comprehensive vs Royal Grammar School Guildford. I had that mentality when I was young until i figured I don't have to go into a self fulfilling prophecy based on such ideals of being stuck with baseline opportunities based on my social class.
My first paycheck was £600. With an extra £1 per hour for working the post midnight shift at the airport. I mean I still get the odd scratchcards but never betting ridiculous sums. I remember I bet like £50 on a single golf match, I won but then I lost it all on horses, women's tennis, 5th division football in Nigeria.... yeahhh I was a bit of a loose cannon. For my 18th birthday I went to the Grosvenor Casino playing poker and lost £200. Then I ended up working constantly whilst studying to deal with my gambling problem.

Here, Here! Nobody puts mystical egg in a corner!

There is no reason for anyone to settle ....I went to a rubbish comprehensive and still got to uni, so do thousands of other people. Students who go to private school aren't any better than anyone else, their families are just a bit richer or maybe a bit more willing to pay for their child's education than most families.
Me too, definitely private or at least grammar school if private is beyond my budget

Judging by my experiences in a comprehensive that was in special measures I'm definitely sending my kids to a private school for at least sixth form. The average A-level grade difference is a few grades. I guess if they were banned at least more of the best teachers will end up in comprehensives. That being said I don't believe in abolishing private schools.

The 'gap'? What gap - teaching is frequently better in state schools. You forget that most Private schools are selective so you can't just compare raw results.

If there was no gap then there is no point to this thread
No, you can’t tell someone where to spend their money (especially with the underfunding and consequent issues in many state schools).

I think they should replace all private schools with grammar schools. Equal opportunity for everyone. Besides, I'm tired of constantly hearing about A level papers being leaked in private schools (especially with Edexcel Maths).

Grammar schools aren't fair either. They are skewed in favour of middle class families who will do things like pay private tutors to coach their kids to pass the entrance exams.....
Some private schools are a total waste of money. I got the same or better grades as most of my friends at A-level who went to private school.

I also think it is a bit too much of a bubble wrapped middle class environment some people had patronising views on those in state schools.

Where does the money come to fund these grammar schools though... If the government wants equal opportunity then prop up the state system rather than drag down the private system
I was looking at my local grammar schools would cost about £15-20,000 a year.

Ah yes we are on the same page state grammars are also my fallback.
Ban them... ok, so all those kids who weren’t funded by the state are now taking up places of kids that deserve it equally, putting even more pressure on school places. Great idea.

They should absolutely be banned. I'm sure if our *****y politicians' kids went to state schools, they actually might start to give a shite about the dire state of our school.
no, the world being unequal is inherent regardless of political ideals. the only way is to optimise solutions, usually by going with-flow to how reality works with ease. Ideal close-to-perfect equality in practice is only possible at the expense of backwardness for everyone as a whole because you are enforcing something unnatural and therefore unpractical. Do you want to be equal to everyone else in a world where you suffer with them together physically not mentally, because there are large scale case studies for that? or just bear the sense of inequality, which is unique in every particular situation and to find a root cause of evil is difficult because everything is interlinked with everything else rather than being in a simple closed system. You will find nothing converges with these open ended debates and they all just diverge away to introduce new entities and complications. Politics is only useful if you really care about everyone else. I have no reason to think you want change for personal reasons. But if you are trying to fix a problem you don't like it is better to focus on yourself which is under your complete control so you can send your children to Eton or Harrows in the future, rather than leverage everyone else through a voice of 1 in 70 mil to make it happen so it comes back at you. So one option is one person changing one circumstance and the other option is taking the risk everyone else will agree with you and changing a national situation. This is why I personally never involve myself in politics. It never gets anything done. But not being on the voting poll has actually reduced my credit rating a little. But that is its only benefit. If I do anything else, it will just end up consuming my time. But of course we need everyone else to whine constantly about problems and criticise wrongdoings- that keeps a democracy effective. But a smart person would not involve themselves into it personally, in my opinion, unless its for exploring your ideas which helps intelligence in other places or if the state of country affects your work. This is just my humble opinion.

Hey all! I have been talking to someone recently about the topic of private schools, and whether they should be allowed in the UK or not. I am not going to share my view on the matter until I get some replies, as I really am interested to hear all your views. It would help a lot with our discussion, thanks!!! I am going to wait for 5-10 replys before replying back 😁😁😁- (Also if the people who run the student room feel I would get more replies in a diffrent forum I will be happy for you to move it 😊)

My advice is to get yourself on the electoral register, it does help with credit rating and other boring stuff like that and you don’t have to actually vote if you don’t want to

So I'm sorry - can I get this right??? You think they should be banned because your parents pay and you don't think the teaching is good enough??? Have you been to a state school? Do realise what a difference small class size or well funded facilities can make??? If its that awful and no worth the money - why don't your parents just move you? You can't say private schools should be banned because the one you are priveldeged to go to doesn't fulfil your expectations.

I don’t think you get it in my opinion just cause u may not go to a private school yourself. But the pressure is immense, back in year seven my mum would take me to the bank with loads of £50 notes in her hands and remind me of how much they sacrifice for me. The teaching at my school is great don’t get me wrong, it’s more to the fact they are money hungry. I went to a state primary school and I remember seeing it was bad and students throwing chairs at teachers but I’m pretty sure grammar school is better. I’m in year ten now, I’m about to do my GCSE’s I can’t move, I was going to go to another country where my parents have loads of houses but they wanted me to finish my education. They have a Mac suite fgs and yet they still demand us to give to charity via them, pay for lunch, pay for trips. It’s not the education that bothers me it’s how money hungry people at private schools are.
