Hello,

I am interested in doing a masters degree, but I attend a very low ranked university. Most MSc degrees require a 2:1, but will the top universities prefer students from respected universities, and does the actual % of the grade matter?

Thanks

No.
No.

No need to create imaginary hurdles for yourself.

It depends on the amount of applicants I guess, but most prestigious programs do look at your grades and uni. It’s more recognized if you get a 1:1 at Cambridge than if you get a 1:1 at an average uni. Percentages don’t really matter though, unless they look into your full transcript.

Prove that.

And it's a "First", not "1:1".

It’s common knowledge: what’s the point of going to a top uni if it doesn’t differentiate you from everyone else?

So you can't prove your earlier statement? Fair enough.

What do you class as a "top uni"?

Have you ever applied to a PG course?

The academic experience?

Besides, you're wrong.

Top universities will select on academic merit. Yes, they will often ask for a specific % grade. However, how they judge the quality of an undergrad degree is much more nuanced than league tables. They understand academic quality at the level of specific departments and academics. It's always worth an application if you've got a decent grade, good references and a decent research proposal, even from a low ranking university.

The fact that you'd like it to be true doesn't make it true

You also sound like a sixth former

Actually I think as per the regulator it's not supposed to have any bearing on your application
